Many of us live as if we're in the waiting room of life, believing our real story will begin when we get the job, find the right person, or reach our goals. We treat today like practice and tomorrow like the main event. This devotional explores how God sees every season as valuable, including the ones that feel like preparation. We'll pray together about recognizing the gifts hidden in our current season and trusting that God is working right now, not just in some future version of our lives.
Short Devotional
Think about how a farmer tends his land throughout the year. He doesn't only value harvest time and dismiss the months of planting, watering, and waiting as unimportant. Every season has its purpose, and each one prepares for what comes next. Yet we often live differently with our own lives. We rush through college, waiting to start our careers, or endure singleness, waiting for marriage, or count down the days at jobs we don't love while dreaming of something better. What if God is actually doing important work in us during these seasons we want to skip?
Ecclesiastes reminds us that there is "a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens." This doesn't just mean that hard times will pass, though they will. It means God has given each season its own purpose and value. The waiting isn't wasted time—it's God's time. The preparation is no less important than the performance. When we spend our current season wishing we were somewhere else, we miss the gifts God wants to give us right here, right now.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come to you knowing that you see my life from beginning to end. I confess that I often treat this season like it doesn't really count, like I'm just marking time until my real life begins.
Help me understand that you have made everything beautiful in its time, including this time I'm living in right now.
I struggle with feeling like I'm behind, like others are ahead of me, like I'm missing out on something better somewhere else. Forgive me for dismissing the season you've placed me in as less important than the seasons I'm hoping for.
Open my eyes to see what you're teaching me today. Show me the gifts you've hidden in this waiting, this learning, this slow growth that I keep wanting to rush.
Help me trust that your timing is perfect, even when it feels too slow or too uncertain. I don't want to waste another day wishing I was somewhere else while missing what you're doing right here.
Give me patience with your process in my life. Help me see that preparing, waiting, and growing are just as valuable as achieving and arriving.
Teach me to be fully present in this season instead of living in tomorrow's possibilities. Fill me with gratitude for where you have me right now and faith that you're preparing me for what's ahead.
Thank you for loving me enough to not give me everything I want exactly when I want it. Thank you for the seasons that teach me to depend on you.
I trust you with my timing, my future, and my today.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
What season of your life do you find yourself rushing through or wishing would end quickly, and what might God be trying to teach you during this time?
If you knew God had specifically chosen your current circumstances to shape you for your future, how would that change the way you approach today?
What are three things you can only learn or experience in your current season that wouldn't be possible in the season you're waiting for?
How has God used past seasons of waiting or preparation in your life to grow your character or faith in ways you didn't expect at the time?
God's timing rarely matches our planning, but it always serves His loving purposes for our lives. This season you're in right now isn't a mistake or a delay—it's exactly where He wants you to grow and learn. Trust that He's working even in the waiting, especially in the waiting. We're grateful you took time to pray and reflect with us today.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace
God Bless!
