Most of us would say that God matters to us, but if we are honest, we often treat our faith like something we can always come back to later. There is a quiet lie that many of us believe, that we will get more serious about God when life slows down, when we feel ready, or when something big enough finally pushes us to. This devotional and prayer will walk us through what it truly means to live ready every day, because that kind of readiness is built long before any storm arrives, and it may be one of the most important things we ever choose to build.
Short Devotional
Think about how much effort we put into preparing for the things that matter to us. We set alarms, make plans, pack bags, and show up on time because we take those things seriously. But when it comes to our walk with God, it is easy to keep pushing it off, telling ourselves we will give more time, more attention, and more heart to it once things finally settle down.
Jesus once told His followers about a homeowner who was not ready for a thief, not because he was a bad person, but simply because he had no idea when the thief was coming. That picture is meant to ask us an honest question: if everything changed today, would the way we have been living actually reflect someone who believes what they say they believe? That question is not meant to bring fear, but to bring us to a place of honest, open conversation with God, which is exactly where this prayer wants to take us.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being with me right now.
I know You are always near, even when I forget to look for You.
Lord, I have been waiting for the right time to get serious about following You. I keep telling myself that tomorrow I will pray more, read more, and give You more of my heart.
But Your Word reminds me that You are coming at an hour I do not expect.
I do not want to be caught off guard, still waiting to get ready.
Forgive me for the times I have let comfort and busyness keep me from drawing closer to You. Forgive me for treating my faith like something I can always fix later.
Help me to make time with You a daily activity, not just a response to hard times.
Teach me to live each day as someone who truly believes You are coming back. Give me eyes to see what really matters, and the courage to let go of what does not.
I trust that You are faithful. I believe You are working in my life even now.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Journaling Prompts
If you knew that today was your last full day to live, what would you do differently? What would you stop doing, and what would you wish you had started sooner?
Be honest with yourself: Is your faith something you actively build every day, or is it something you return to when things get hard? What does that pattern tell you about where God fits in your daily life?
What is one thing in your life right now that is quietly keeping you from spending more time with God? Is it fear, busyness, distraction, or something else entirely?
Wherever you are on your journey with God, today is a good day to take one small step closer to Him. Readiness is not about being perfect or having everything figured out. It is about saying yes to God today, in the quiet and ordinary moments of real life, before the storms come.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
