Many men spend years looking for the right woman. They search, they pray, they wait—but sometimes they forget one important step. Before we can find someone of great worth, we must ask a harder question: Have we become someone of great worth? This is about the inner work that comes before the outward search, and why becoming the right person matters just as much as finding the right person.
Short Devotional
It's easy to make a list of what we want in a spouse. We know what we're looking for—someone kind, faithful, strong, wise. But here's the question that stops us in our tracks: Would the person we're looking for be looking for someone like us? That's not meant to hurt. It's meant to help. The truth is, we tend to attract who we are, not just who we want. If we want a person of noble character, we must be working on our own character first.
Think about a farmer. A farmer doesn't walk into a field and demand a harvest. He prepares the soil. He plants seeds. He tends the ground and waits. The same is true for us. We cannot expect to find something we have not prepared ourselves to receive. God cares about the desires of our hearts, but He also cares about the condition of our hearts. As we bring this to Him in prayer, let's ask for the courage to look honestly at ourselves—not with shame, but with hope that He is still shaping us into who we're meant to be.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come before You right now, knowing that You see me completely. You know my hopes, my desires, and the longing in my heart to find a woman of noble character—one whose worth is far above rubies. But today, I ask You to turn my eyes inward before I look outward.
Search my heart, Lord. Show me the areas where I am still growing. Reveal the places where pride, selfishness, or immaturity have taken root.
I confess that I have sometimes focused so much on finding the right person that I forgot to ask if I am becoming the right person.
Forgive me for wanting what I have not yet prepared myself to steward.
Thank You for not leaving me where I am. Thank You for Your patience and Your power to change me from the inside out.
I am grateful that You are more concerned with my character than my comfort, and that You love me enough to shape me.
Give me strength to do the hard work. Help me become a man of integrity, wisdom, faithfulness, and humility.
Teach me what true value looks like so I can recognize it when I see it. Prepare my heart to receive the gift You have for me in Your perfect timing.
I trust You, Lord. I believe You are faithful to complete the good work You started in me.
I pray all of this with confidence in the mighty name of Jesus.
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
If the woman you desire were to look at your life today—your habits, your character, your walk with God—what would she see? Would she be drawn to it or concerned by it?
What are three areas of your character that you know still need growth? Be specific. What would it look like to actively work on these areas over the next six months?
Think about the qualities you want in a future wife. Now flip the list: Do you possess those same qualities yourself? Why or why not?
The search for the right person is real, and so is the call to become the right person. Let this be a season of honest reflection and steady growth, trusting that God is working even when we cannot see it. May we have the courage to look in the mirror before we look across the room—and may we like what we're becoming.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
