Have you noticed how uncomfortable we get when there’s nothing to do? The moment we have a few empty minutes, our hands reach for our phones, the TV remote, or anything to fill the silence—anything to avoid feeling bored.

But what if those quiet, empty moments aren’t problems to solve? What if they’re actually invitations we keep ignoring? Today, we’re going to talk about reclaiming those in-between moments and discovering what God might want to show us when we stop running from stillness.

Short Devotional

The prophet Jeremiah wrote Lamentations during one of the darkest times in Israel’s history. Everything was destroyed. There was nothing left to do, nowhere to go, and no distractions available. It was in that stripped-down, empty place that he wrote today’s verse. All he had was time—and in that time, he rediscovered that God was enough. When we constantly fill every gap in our day with entertainment and noise, we might be protecting ourselves from the very emptiness where God does His deepest work.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: we’ve trained ourselves to fear silence and boredom because we’re afraid of what we might feel or think. But waiting hopefully isn’t about doing nothing—it’s about being present enough to notice that God is already there. When we stop medicating every quiet moment with distraction, we create space to remember that our real treasure isn’t found in entertainment—it’s found in a relationship with the One who calls Himself our portion.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I confess that I’ve become afraid of quiet. The moment I have nothing to do, I reach for my phone, turn on the TV, or find some way to fill the emptiness. I’ve gotten so good at distracting myself that I barely know how to sit still anymore.

Forgive me for treating You like You’re not enough—like I need constant entertainment to be satisfied.

Thank You for being my portion, even when I forget what that means. Thank You that You don’t give up on me when I choose distraction over Your presence.

I realize now that my boredom might not be a problem—it might be Your invitation. Those quiet, empty moments I’ve been running from could be exactly where You want to meet me.

Help me break this habit of filling every gap with noise. Teach me to wait hopefully instead of scrolling mindlessly.

When I feel that restless urge to grab my phone or turn on a screen, remind me that You are present right there in that moment. Give me the courage to sit in the silence and discover that You really are enough.

I don’t want to miss what You’re offering me in the stillness. Show me how to be content with You as my portion, not just as a nice idea but as my actual daily experience.

Train my heart to seek You in the boring moments, the waiting rooms, the quiet evenings. Let me rediscover the hope that comes from simply being with You.

In Jesus’ powerful name, Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • When was the last time you sat in complete silence for more than five minutes without any device or distraction? What feelings came up, and why do you think you felt that way?

  • Make a list of all the ways you typically “kill time” during your day. Which of these activities genuinely refreshes you, and which ones are just numbing habits?

  • Today's verse says, “The LORD is my portion.” In your own words, what do you think it means for God to be your portion? How would your daily life look different if you truly believed this?

The invitation is simple but not easy: the next time boredom shows up, don’t run. Sit with it. Notice what happens when you give yourself permission to simply be, rather than constantly doing. God has been waiting in those quiet spaces all along, ready to remind you that He is your portion—your treasure, your satisfaction, your enough.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.

God Bless!
