We spend so much time worrying about situations—bills, health problems, job security—but if we’re really honest, those aren’t what keep us up at night. What terrifies us most is what other people think, whether they’ll accept us, or if they’ll walk away when things get hard. David understood this when he wrote today’s verse. He didn’t ask “what shall I fear?” He asked, “whom shall I fear?” This small word tells us something important: our deepest fears always have a face attached to them. Today, we’re going to explore why recognizing this truth changes everything about how we pray and where we find our courage.
Short Devotional
When David faced Goliath, the giant wasn’t really his problem. The problem was King Saul’s jealousy, the army’s doubt, and his own brothers’ mockery. Even when David became king, his greatest pain came from people—Saul’s pursuit, Absalom’s betrayal, the prophet Nathan’s confrontation. Yet David learned something that set him free: when God is your light and salvation, every human threat loses its power. Think about the last time you felt real fear. Was it actually about the situation, or was it about what someone might think, say, or do?
Here’s what changes everything: people can reject us, judge us, or leave us, but they cannot diminish who we are in God’s eyes. They cannot snatch us from His hand. They cannot stop His purposes for our lives. When we grasp that God is our stronghold—our unshakeable fortress—then even the opinions and actions of others become small. This doesn’t mean rejection doesn’t hurt. It means it doesn’t have to control us. Let’s bring this truth to God in prayer.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come to You acknowledging that You are with me right now, in this very moment. You see me, You know me, and You love me completely. Thank You for being my light and my salvation, the stronghold of my life.
So many of my fears have faces attached to them. I’m afraid of what people will think if they really knew me. I’m afraid of being rejected, of being judged, of being abandoned when I need someone most.
I’ve spent so much energy trying to please others, trying to control their opinions of me, trying to make sure they don’t walk away. I’ve let the fear of people become bigger than my trust in You.
Forgive me for giving others power over my peace that belongs only to You. Forgive me for building my confidence on approval from people instead of acceptance from You.
Thank You that no matter who turns away, You never do. Thank You that no human rejection can change Your love for me.
Help me remember that when I ask, “whom shall I fear?” the answer is no one—because You are with me. Give me the courage to live free from the opinions of others. Help me care more about Your voice than their voices.
When rejection comes, remind me that I am held secure in Your hands. When judgment comes, remind me that I am already accepted by You. When abandonment comes, remind me that You will never leave me.
I pray this in the powerful name of Jesus, my Savior and my strength.
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
Who is the specific person (or type of person) whose opinion has the most power over how you feel about yourself? What would change if you believed God’s opinion of you mattered more than theirs?
Describe a time when fear of someone’s rejection or judgment stopped you from doing something you felt you should do. What did that fear cost you?
If you truly believed that no person could diminish your worth or stop God’s plans for your life, what would you do differently tomorrow?
The people in our lives matter, and their words can either hurt or heal us. But they cannot define us. Only God can do that. As you move through your days, pay attention to when fear of someone’s opinion starts to control your choices. That’s your moment to remember: God is your stronghold, and no one can shake what He has secured. We’re praying that you experience a breakthrough from the fear of people and step into the freedom that comes from knowing whose you are.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
