There's something that happens to all of us at some point—that moment when the things we once chased stop giving us that rush of happiness. Maybe it's the new gadget that's already gathering dust or the achievement that didn't feel as good as we thought it would. This devotional and prayer is about those moments when the things of earth start to lose their shine. We'll explore what God says about setting our hearts on something that never grows old. Together, we'll look at why this matters so much for our spiritual health and how a simple shift in focus can change everything about how we experience joy.
Short Devotional
Remember those Christmas mornings as a kid? How the toys that seemed magical on December 25th often ended up forgotten by February. That same pattern follows us into adulthood, just with bigger, more expensive toys. We keep reaching for the next thing, hoping it will finally be the one that satisfies us completely. But Solomon, the wisest and richest man who ever lived, tried it all and called it "chasing the wind." Why do these earthly pleasures always leave us wanting more?
This happens because we were designed for something deeper. When God tells us in Colossians 3:2 to "think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth," He's not trying to take away our fun. He's pointing us toward what really works—toward joys that don't fade with time or lose their flavor. When we start focusing on eternal things—relationships that matter, character that lasts, moments of true connection with God—we find a steadiness that no earthly pleasure can touch. What if the answer to our restlessness isn't finding better earthly treasures but lifting our gaze higher?
Let's Pray
Father,
I come to You today aware that my heart often chases after things that don't last. You see how easily I get caught up in wanting more - more stuff, more comfort, more praise from others. When I get what I want, the happiness fades so quickly, and I'm left feeling empty again.
Lord, help me think about the things of heaven, not just the things of earth. Remind me that You have more for me than what I can see or touch right now. When I scroll through social media and feel the pull to want what others have, stop me. When I feel like my worth comes from what I own or accomplish, correct my thinking.
Thank You for the good gifts You give me to enjoy on earth. Help me receive them with gratitude without making them the center of my life. Show me how to use what You've given me to build treasures in heaven instead.
Jesus, I need Your help to change where I look for joy. Fill me with the kind of happiness that doesn't depend on my circumstances. Help me find purpose in serving You and others. Show me that Your love is the treasure my heart has been searching for all along.
When I face disappointment with the things of earth, don't let me just find another earthly distraction. Instead, turn my eyes toward heaven. Help me see my life here as preparation for forever with You.
I choose today to set my mind on things above. I trust that as I do, You will fill me with joy that truly satisfies and lasts beyond any pleasure this world offers.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
What earthly pleasure have you recently noticed doesn't satisfy you like it once did? What might God be teaching you through that fading satisfaction?
What heavenly value (like love, joy, peace, patience) do you most want to grow in your life right now? What small step could you take today to nurture it?
Write a letter to God expressing what you're currently chasing that isn't bringing the satisfaction you hoped for, and ask for His perspective on what might bring deeper joy.
Let's be honest - those earthly pleasures can be pretty amazing sometimes, right? We're not trying to pretend they don't matter or feel good. But here's the thing - they're like appetizers, not the main meal. They give us little tastes of joy that point to something much bigger. When we start looking at life with heaven in mind, the small stuff just doesn't knock us down like it used to. We're created for something more. This week, let's try lifting our eyes up a bit higher to the heavens. There's a kind of joy waiting for us that doesn't have an expiration date - and that changes everything.
Until next time,
May the Lord Bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace
God Bless!
