Bible Verse

Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them. And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field. The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements.

James 1:9-11 (NLT)

You know those quiet moments when you're walking down a street, and something catches your eye? Maybe it's a tiny flower pushing through a crack in the sidewalk or the way sunlight catches a dewdrop on a blade of grass. These little glimpses of beauty often say more than grand displays ever could. Life has a way of surprising us with joy in the most unexpected places. Sometimes, we get so caught up looking for big, impressive things that we miss the small treasures right in front of us. Let's take a deep breath together and explore what it means to find richness in places where others might only see emptiness.

Short Devotional

There's something incredibly touching about the story of the widow at Zarephath. Picture this scene with me: She's down to her last handful of flour and a tiny bit of oil—just enough for one final meal with her son before they face the inevitable. Then along comes Elijah, asking her to share even this little bit. Can you imagine what must have gone through her mind? Yet, in that moment of having almost nothing, she discovered a wealth of courage and faith that changed everything.

What moves me most about her story is how she chose to give when it made no logical sense. While others might have seen a poor widow at her lowest point, God saw a heart rich in trust. That simple jar of flour never ran empty, that little cruise of oil never ran dry – not because she had much, but because she dared to share the little she had. Her story tells us about a different kind of abundance, one that flows from trust rather than excess.

Want to sit with this story awhile? You'll find it in 1 Kings 17, where every word feels like it was written just for us.

Let's Pray

Father in Heaven,

Thank You for being here with me right now, in this quiet moment of reflection. Your presence fills every empty space with meaning, every void with possibility. Lord, when I look at my life through earthly eyes, sometimes all I can see are the lacks, the gaps, the places where I wish there was more. But You see differently, don't You?

Help me understand what You meant when You said the poor have something to boast about. Open my eyes to see the wealth You've already placed in my heart – the capacity to love, the ability to show kindness, the gift of faith that grows stronger even in difficult times. When I feel small or overlooked, remind me that You have honored me with Your love and attention.

Father, I confess that sometimes I chase after things that fade – recognition, success, material comfort. Like that little flower in the field that James wrote about, these treasures don't last. Teach me to see true value through Your eyes. Show me how to cultivate the kind of wealth that matters – compassion, generosity, trust in You. Let my actions flow from a heart that's rich in Your love.

Jesus, You chose to become poor so we could become truly rich in what matters most. Thank You for this profound mystery, this upside-down wisdom that shows us real treasure. Give me the courage to live differently and measure wealth not by what I have but by how much I can give. Help me find joy in simple things, peace in Your presence, and satisfaction in serving others.

I trust You to provide exactly what I need. Thank You for being my greatest treasure, the wealth that can never fade or be taken away.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • What "treasures" in your life might seem worthless to others but hold deep meaning for you? How do these reflect God's values?

  • How does the image of the wildflower in James 1:9-11 speak to you about what truly lasts? Write about what you want your life to produce that will endure.

  • Imagine sitting with Jesus and showing Him your "treasure box" of what you value most. What would you share with Him? What do you think He would point out as valuable that you might have overlooked?

Do you know what's beautiful about seeking treasure? Sometimes, the search itself becomes the gift. As you go through your days, try to notice the small moments that make your heart feel full – maybe it's the way your child's hand fits in yours, or the smell of rain on warm earth, or the sound of a friend's laughter. These are the real gems that make life rich. Keep your heart open to joy in unexpected places. Notice the whispers of God's love in ordinary moments. Pay attention to the ways your spirit grows stronger through simple acts of faith and love. Until next time, remember that you carry treasures within you that are more precious than gold – and they only grow more valuable as you share them.

God Bless!
