We all have moments when we know we should walk away from something, but we end up right back in the same place. Most of the time, we focus on what we did wrong — but we rarely stop to ask what led us there in the first place. This devotional and prayer will walk us through one of the most honest prayers we can offer to God: asking Him to reveal the specific things in our lives that open the door to temptation, and trusting Him to help us close it.
Short Devotional
In Genesis 39, there is a man named Joseph who was pressured hard to do something he knew was wrong, and instead of staying to figure it out, he turned and ran straight out of the house. His response teaches us something we often miss — the closer we stay to what tempts us, the harder it becomes to say no. The real battle is often not in the moment of temptation, but in the small choices we make long before we get there.
We live surrounded by things that can quietly pull our hearts in the wrong direction — certain people, certain apps, certain times of the day when we feel lonely, bored, or forgotten. The question worth asking is not just "did we fall?" but "what opened the door in the first place?" When we are willing to bring that question honestly before God, we are ready to pray.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being with me now. You see everything about me — the good and the things I am still working through.
Your Word tells me to run from sexual immorality, and today I am asking You to help me do that. Lord, I need Your help to see what pulls me toward sin in the first place.
Show me the triggers I have been ignoring — the apps I scroll through, the times I am alone with the wrong people, and the moments when loneliness opens the door to temptation.
I do not want to keep falling into the same traps.
Give me the courage to be honest about my triggers and what they look like. Help me remove the things that weaken me.
Surround me with people who will hold me accountable and point me back to You.
Thank You that You are not here to shame me — You are here to free me. I believe You can break every cycle that has had a hold on me.
I trust that Your grace is bigger than any struggle I face. I receive Your forgiveness and strength right now.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Journaling Prompts
Think about a recent time when you were pulled toward something you knew wasn't right. What happened just before it — what were you feeling, watching, or doing?
Is there a person, place, habit, or app in your life that you already know is a trigger but haven't made a change about yet? What has kept you from making that change?
Write a short, honest letter to God asking Him to show you one trigger you might be blind to — and tell Him exactly how you feel about what He might reveal.
God is not surprised by what tempts us — He already knows, and He already has a way through it. The bravest thing we can do is stop pretending we have it all figured out and ask Him to show us what we keep missing. The next edition will continue this journey of asking God the hard questions — because that is exactly where life-changing prayer begins.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
