Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is ask a question we already know the answer to. When we look at our biggest worries and ask, “What can people really do to me?” we might discover that the answer includes losing our job, facing rejection, or even physical harm. Yet there’s something powerful about asking this question anyway. This devotional explores why challenging our fears with this bold question can change everything, even when we know the stakes are real. The prayer that follows will help us find the courage to face whatever comes our way.

Short Devotional

Jesus himself faced this exact challenge on the night before his death. He knew exactly what people could do to him - and they would do all of it within hours. Yet he still found the strength to trust that God’s plan was bigger than human harm. The question isn’t whether bad things can happen to us. The question is whether those bad things can stop God’s good plans for our lives.

We often treat our fears like they hold the final say over our future. But what if we’re giving our worries more power than they actually have? Yes, people can hurt us, disappoint us, and make life difficult. But they cannot touch the parts of us that matter most to God. When we start to see the difference between temporary trouble and lasting harm, we begin to live with a freedom that changes everything around us.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I come to you knowing that you see every worry that keeps me awake at night. You understand the fears that make my heart race and the concerns that feel too big for me to handle.

Right now, I acknowledge that you are here with me, and your presence changes everything about my situation.

Lord, when I think about the people who might hurt me or the circumstances that could go wrong, I feel overwhelmed. But your word reminds me that you are on my side, and I don’t need to fear what others can do to me.

Help me understand what this really means. Show me the difference between the temporary pain that people can cause and the lasting good that you are working in my life.

I admit that I sometimes give my fears more control than I give you. I worry about losing things that matter to me, about being rejected or hurt. But I want to trust that even if these things happen, they cannot separate me from your love or stop your plans for me.

Give me the courage to ask the hard question: “What can people really do to me?” and to find peace in knowing that you have the final word.

Thank you for being my defender and my strength. Help me live with confidence, not because life is easy, but because you are faithful.

I pray this in the powerful name of Jesus, who faced the worst that people could do and still trusted you completely.

Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • What specific fear have you been avoiding by not asking, “What can people really do to me?” Write about why this question feels scary to think about.

  • If you truly believed that God’s plans for you cannot be stopped by human opposition, how would you approach your current challenges differently?

  • Write about the difference between temporary setbacks and lasting harm. What falls into each category in your current situation?

The courage to ask hard questions often leads us to the most freeing answers. When we dare to examine our fears honestly, we discover that God’s love for us is stronger than anything people can take away. Remember that courage isn’t the absence of fear - it’s choosing to trust God even when we know the risks are real. May this truth bring you peace as you face whatever comes next.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.

God Bless!
