Something violent happens to our hearts when we rush through life at breakneck speed. We damage our ability to hear God's voice and trust His timing without even realizing it. Every hurried step we take creates distance between us and the peace God wants to give us. This devotional and prayer will help us slow down and remember that God's best work often happens when we stop racing against time. Learning to be still is one of the most important skills we can develop as followers of Jesus.
Short Devotional
Think about the last time you felt truly at peace. Chances are, you weren't rushing to get somewhere or checking your phone every few minutes. Speed has become our false god, promising us control and success if we just move faster. But Jesus never hurried, even when people were dying and crowds were demanding His attention. He understood something we've forgotten: rushing creates anxiety, and anxiety kills our ability to trust God's perfect timing.
When we live in constant hurry, we train our hearts to believe that everything depends on us moving quickly. We start to think that if we don't act immediately, God's plans will fail. This kind of thinking is actually pride disguised as productivity. The truth is that God has been working long before we arrived, and He'll continue working long after we're gone. Our job isn't to speed up God's timeline but to trust it completely, even when it feels too slow for our liking.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come to You knowing that You are always present, never rushed, and never late. I confess that I've let speed become my master instead of letting You lead my days.
When I read "Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don't worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes," I realize how much I've been worrying and fretting instead of being still.
Forgive me for believing that hurrying shows faith when it actually shows fear.
I admit that my obsession with speed has hurt my soul deeply. I've missed Your voice because I was too busy talking and planning. I've missed Your peace because I was too busy moving and striving. I've missed Your timing because I was too focused on my urgent schedule.
Help me slow down and remember that You are God and I am not. Teach me that Your pace is always right.
Teach me to be still in Your presence without feeling guilty about not doing something productive. Show me how to wait patiently for You to act instead of taking matters into my own hands.
Give me strength to trust Your timing even when others seem to be getting ahead through their wicked schemes. Help me rest in Your control.
Transform my hurried heart into a trusting heart that beats with Yours each day. Let me find my worth in Your unfailing love, not speed.
In Jesus's powerful name,
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
What situations make you feel like you need to hurry the most, and what fears drive that urgency?
If Jesus were living your exact life today, what do you think He would do differently about your schedule and pace?
How might God be trying to teach you something important through the things that seem to be taking too long?
God's invitation to be still isn't a suggestion—it's a lifeline for our hurried hearts. When we slow down and trust His timing, we discover that His pace is perfect for our souls. Remember that the God who created time itself is never worried about running out of it. May you find courage this week to choose stillness over speed and trust over urgency.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace
God Bless!
