Today, we're going to be reflecting on one of God's most important commands: honoring our father and mother. As Mother's Day has just passed and Father's Day approaches, it's a perfect time to think about the precious gift of parents in our lives. These special days remind us to appreciate our parents while they're still with us, not just with cards and gifts, but with genuine honor and respect. The time we have with our parents is limited, and each conversation holds potential wisdom that can guide us throughout our lives.
The Bible gives us beautiful examples of children honoring their parents even into old age. Remember how Joseph, despite being second-in-command in Egypt, showed tremendous respect for his elderly father Jacob? When reunited after years of separation, Joseph didn't just provide food during the famine—he gave his father the best land in Goshen, personally brought him before Pharaoh, and later fulfilled Jacob's burial wishes exactly as requested. What would change in our relationships if we approached our parents with this level of care and attention? God's command to honor our parents isn't just for children—it's a lifelong calling that brings blessing to families across generations.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come before You grateful for the gift of my parents. Thank You for the way You've worked through them in my life, whether our relationship has been easy or complicated. Help me to honor them as You commanded in Exodus 20:12, not just out of duty but from a heart of genuine love and respect.
Lord, I confess I don't always appreciate my parents as I should. Sometimes I focus on their flaws rather than their wisdom, or I take for granted the time we have together. Forgive me for the times I've spoken harshly, rolled my eyes, or simply ignored their wisdom. Remind me that their days are numbered, and each moment with them is precious.
For the parent who is difficult to honor, give me extra grace and wisdom. Help me set healthy boundaries while still showing respect. For the parent who is aging, give me patience and compassion as roles begin to reverse. For the parent who has passed away, comfort me in grief and help me honor their memory.
Open my eyes to see the wisdom my parents have gained through their journey. Give me humility to listen and learn from their experiences, both good and bad. Show me practical ways to show honor—through my words, my time, my attention, and my care.
Thank You that when I honor my parents, I reflect Your character and receive Your blessing. I trust You to guide these important relationships for Your glory.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
What is one piece of wisdom your mother or father shared that has proven valuable in your life? How have you applied it?
Recall a time when honoring your parent(s) was difficult. What made it challenging, and how might God be asking you to grow through that situation?
If you knew you had just one more conversation with your parent(s), what would you want to ask them or tell them? What's stopping you from having that conversation now?
How does your relationship with your parents affect your understanding of God as a Father? What aspects of their parenting have helped or hindered your view of God?
The command to honor our parents carries a promise of blessing that extends beyond our individual lives to our communities and future generations. As we practice intentional honor—listening well, speaking respectfully, and caring practically—we create a legacy that will influence our children and grandchildren. May we embrace this opportunity to cherish our parents while we can, gathering their wisdom like precious stones to carry forward. God will faithfully guide us in this journey of honor, even when the path includes challenges.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace
God Bless!
