There's something scary about reaching out our hands and saying, "I need help." Maybe we've spent so long building walls of strength that the thought of letting someone peek behind them makes our heart race a little. You know that feeling? When the dishes are piling up, the emails are flooding in, or the quiet weight of worry feels too heavy to name - and still, we hesitate to pick up the phone. "Carry each other's burdens," God whispers through Paul's words in Galatians 6:2, like a gentle reminder that we were never meant to walk this path alone.
Short Devotional
Have you ever noticed how stories of vulnerability often leave the deepest imprints on our hearts? Epaphroditus, one of Paul's trusted friends, faced this crossroads when illness struck him far from home (Philippians 2:25-30). There he was, a dedicated worker for Christ, suddenly finding himself unable to serve in the ways he'd planned. Instead of pushing through or hiding his struggle, he allowed the Philippian church to minister to him - creating space for a beautiful picture of how the body of Christ supports one another.
The fear of becoming replaceable whispers loudly when we're struggling, doesn't it? Like we somehow need to prove our worth through constant giving. But tucked away in Scripture is a tender reminder of God's heart for community - picture Gaius, whose ministry of hospitality meant opening not just his home but his heart to fellow believers (3 John 1:5-8). His willingness to receive travelers, to be interrupted and relied upon, speaks volumes about the give-and-take rhythm of genuine fellowship.
Read more about Gaius in 3 John to discover how opening our lives to others' help creates lasting bonds of love.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for creating us for community and connection. As we pause in Your presence, help us see the beautiful truth that You never intended for us to walk alone. We confess the times fear has kept us from reaching out - those moments when pride masked our deeper worries about being too much or not enough.
Lord, shine Your light on the places in our hearts where we've believed the lie that needing help makes us weak. Give us the courage to trust that You've designed Your family to support one another, just as You showed us through Your Son. Help us recognize that when we allow others to carry our burdens, we're not just receiving help - we're giving them the gift of fulfilling Your command to love one another.
Guide us in discerning when and how to share our struggles. Grant us wisdom to see that our vulnerability might be exactly what someone else needs to feel less alone in their own journey. Thank You for the people You've placed in our lives, ready to walk alongside us through every season.
Strengthen our faith to believe that letting others in won't make us replaceable - it will make us more whole. Help us trust that You've created each of us with unique worth that isn't diminished when we need support. We step forward in faith, choosing to believe that allowing others to carry our burdens is part of Your perfect design for building Your kingdom.
In Jesus' name, who showed us the power of receiving help,
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
What specific fears come up when you think about asking someone to help carry your burdens?
Remember a time when someone trusted you with their struggles. How did it make you feel about them?
What would change in your relationships if you viewed asking for help as giving others an opportunity to serve?
You know those moments when someone trusts you with their heart, and suddenly the space between you feels sacred? That's what happens when we dare to let others help carry our burdens. It's scary, yes - like stepping onto a bridge we can't quite see the end of. But with each step, we discover something amazing: our need for help isn't a weakness to hide but a doorway to deeper connection.
The people around us aren't waiting to judge our struggles; they're waiting to share them. As we learn to open our hands and hearts, we might just find that being carried makes room for more love than we ever imagined. And isn't that exactly what we all need?
Until next time,
May the Lord Bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace
God Bless!
