Have you ever faced a situation where everything fell apart, and the hardest part wasn't the loss itself but wondering why God let it happen? Maybe it was a relationship, a dream, your health, or something you worked years to build. We stand in the rubble of our lives and face an uncomfortable question: Can we really trust the God who allowed this pain to be the one who heals it? This prayer explores one of faith's greatest tensions—learning to surrender control and trust God's love even when His methods don't make sense.
Short Devotional
Think about Jeremiah sitting in prison while his city crumbled around him. God didn't just allow Jerusalem's destruction—He caused it. The people's sin had consequences, and God used an enemy army to bring judgment. Yet in the middle of this tragedy, God spoke promises of healing and restoration. The same hand that tore down would build up. This wasn't cruelty—it was love doing what love must do. Sometimes things need to break completely before they can be remade correctly.
We struggle with this because we want a God who prevents all pain, not one who sometimes uses it. We want control over how healing happens and when. But what if our demand for a pain-free path reveals we're trying to be our own savior? What if trusting God means accepting that His love looks different than our preferences? When a surgeon cuts to remove what's killing us, we don't call it violence—we call it necessary. Maybe God's breaking isn't about punishment but preparation. Maybe the devastation we're facing isn't the end of His love but the beginning of a deeper restoration than we could design ourselves.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come to You with questions I'm almost afraid to ask. You see everything I've lost, everything that's fallen apart, and I need to be honest—some days it's hard to trust You when You could have stopped this.
I don't understand why You allowed my life to break the way it did. I built things, I loved people, I tried my best, and now I'm standing in the ruins wondering if You were even there.
But here's what I'm learning: my trust was never supposed to be in my ability to hold everything together. It was supposed to be in You.
I confess I wanted to control my own life, to be the architect of my own happiness. I wanted You to bless my plans, not interrupt them. Forgive me for believing I knew better than You what I needed.
Like Jeremiah hearing promises while his city burned, I'm choosing to believe Your word over what I see. You promise health and healing. You promise abundant peace and security.
I don't know how You'll do it or when, but I'm surrendering my timeline and my blueprint to You. If You had to break what I built so You could build something better, then I trust You.
Heal what's broken in me—not just the visible wounds but the hidden places where I've been trying to be my own God.
Show me that Your love isn't diminished by my pain; it's actually displayed through how You redeem it. I'm letting go of control and holding onto You instead.
In Jesus' name, who was broken so I could be made whole, Amen.
Journaling Prompts
What specific area of your life has "broken" that you're still struggling to trust God with, and what would it look like to surrender control of that situation completely?
What does it reveal about your view of God's love if you can only trust Him when life goes according to your plan?
If you're honest, how do you feel about God's role in allowing your pain—and how does that feeling affect your prayer life and relationship with Him?
This tension between God's sovereignty and our pain doesn't disappear overnight, but choosing to trust Him in it changes everything. As you sit with these questions today, remember that doubt isn't the opposite of faith—refusing to bring those doubts to God is. Keep talking to Him, keep wrestling, keep surrendering. He's big enough to handle your questions and faithful enough to heal what He's allowed to break.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
