Sometimes God asks us to do things that feel completely wrong to our hearts and minds. When we read "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take" (Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT), something inside us wants to resist. This verse challenges every part of us that wants to stay in control and figure things out on our own. Today's devotional and prayer will help us understand why God asks us to trust Him even when it feels scary, and how we can learn to let go of our need to control everything. This prayer matters because learning to trust God completely changes how we face every challenge and decision in our lives.
Short Devotional
Think about a time when someone asked you to close your eyes and trust them to guide you safely across a room. Your brain probably said, "This is dangerous!" even though you knew the person cared about you. That's exactly what happens when God asks us to trust Him with our lives. Our minds want to see the whole plan, understand every step, and keep control of what happens next. But God says His thoughts are higher than our thoughts, and His ways work better than our ways, even when we can't see how.
The hardest part about trusting God isn't that He's not trustworthy - it's that trusting Him means we have to admit we don't have all the answers. We have to say "I don't know what's best" when everything in us wants to believe we do know. We have to give up control when we feel perfectly capable of handling things ourselves. We have to believe God is working even when we can't see Him or feel Him nearby. This kind of trust doesn't come naturally to us, but it's exactly what God invites us to experience because He knows it leads to the best possible life.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come to You knowing that You are here with me right now, even when I can't feel Your presence. I admit that trusting You with all my heart is one of the hardest things You ask me to do.
Every part of me wants to figure things out on my own and stay in control of my life. When I can't see the outcome, my mind races with worry and fear.
When I feel capable of handling something myself, I don't want to surrender that control to You.
Thank You for being patient with me when I struggle to trust. Thank You for loving me even when I try to depend on my own understanding instead of seeking Your will.
I'm grateful that You promise to show me which path to take when I truly trust You with everything.
Help me learn to trust You when I can't see what's coming next. Give me the strength to surrender control of the things I think I can handle on my own.
When You seem far away or silent, help me still acknowledge that You are working in ways I can't see. When my ways seem so reasonable and right to me, give me faith to believe that Your ways are always better.
I choose to trust You today with my fears, my plans, my relationships, and my future.
Show me the path You want me to take, and give me the courage to follow it even when it doesn't make sense to me.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
What area of your life feels hardest to trust God with completely, and what makes that area feel so scary to surrender?
Think about a time when you tried to control a situation that didn't go the way you planned. How might things have been different if you had trusted God from the beginning?
Describe a situation where your way seemed perfectly reasonable, but God might have had a different and better plan that you couldn't see.
Learning to trust God completely is a lifelong process, not something we master overnight. Every time we choose to trust Him instead of leaning on our own understanding, we grow stronger in our faith and discover more of His goodness. God is patient with us as we learn, and He celebrates every small step we take toward trusting Him more. We're in this together, and God's faithfulness will carry us through every moment of uncertainty.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace
God Bless!
