Bible Verse

Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.

Luke 6:38 (NLT). Other Translations: (NIV) (NKJV)

There's a prayer that countless believers whisper daily: "God, please bless me financially." It seems innocent enough, even faithful. But what if this simple request reveals something unexpected about our hearts? What if asking God for money actually shows we're not prepared to handle His response? This devotional explores why our willingness to give away what we have often determines whether we're ready to receive what God wants to provide. The prayer we'll share today will help us examine our hearts before we ask for more, ensuring we're prepared for the abundance God desires to pour into our lives.

Short Devotional

Jesus taught His followers a principle that turns our thinking upside down. He explained that those who give freely will receive abundantly, but the key isn't in the asking—it's in the giving. When we pray for financial blessing while holding tightly to what we already have, we reveal a heart that isn't ready for God's generosity. Think about it: if we can't trust God enough to share our current resources, how can we handle the responsibility of greater abundance? The very act of asking for more while refusing to give what we have shows we view money as ours to hoard rather than God's to steward.

This creates a spiritual contradiction that blocks the very blessing we seek. God wants to bless us financially, but He also knows that money in the wrong hands can become a curse rather than a gift. Our readiness to give demonstrates that we understand the true purpose of money—to serve God's kingdom and help others. When we can freely release what's in our hands, we show God that our hearts are prepared to receive what's in His. The dangerous prayer isn't asking for blessing; it's asking without first becoming the kind of person who can handle the answer.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I come before You knowing that You see my heart completely. I confess that sometimes I ask You for financial blessing while holding tightly to what I already have.

Forgive me for the times I've treated money as mine to control instead of Yours to steward. I recognize that my willingness to give reveals whether I'm truly ready to receive Your abundance.

Search my heart, Lord, and show me areas where fear has made me stingy. Help me understand that holding onto money doesn't create security—trusting You does.

I want to be someone who gives freely, knowing that You promise to return to me in ways beyond what I can imagine. Teach me to see every dollar as an opportunity to partner with You in blessing others.

Change my perspective on wealth and blessing. Instead of asking You to fill my bank account, help me first become generous with what I have today.

Give me the courage to release my grip on material things and trust that You will provide for every need. Show me specific ways to give this week, whether through money, time, or resources.

I pray for wisdom to handle whatever financial blessing You choose to send my way. Prepare my heart to be a faithful steward of both little and much.

Help me remember that true wealth comes from knowing You and being used for Your purposes. Thank You for Your patience as I learn to trust completely.

In Jesus' name, I pray.

Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • If God doubled your income tomorrow, what would you do with the extra money, and what does your answer reveal about your heart?

  • What fears about the future make it hard for you to give generously in the present?

  • How do you think your relationship with money would change if you truly believed God would always provide for your needs?

God wants to bless us, but He also wants to protect us from the dangers that come with unprepared hearts. When we learn to give freely, we show Him that we understand money's true purpose and can be trusted with His resources. This doesn't mean giving away everything we have, but it does mean holding our possessions with open hands. As we practice generosity with what we currently have, we prepare our hearts for the abundance God desires to provide. Remember, the goal isn't to earn God's blessing through giving, but to become the kind of people who can receive His gifts without losing our souls in the process.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace

God Bless!
