Have you ever wondered if the God you believe in is the God you actually know, or just the God you've heard about? Many of us carry faith that was handed down—passed along through Sunday school lessons, family traditions, and sermons we've memorized. But there comes a moment when life demands more than borrowed beliefs. Today, we're going to explore the difference between a faith we've inherited and a faith we've tested ourselves, and why God is actually inviting us to discover His goodness firsthand.
Short Devotional
In today’s verse, David doesn't ask us to hear about God's goodness or memorize facts about His character. He says, "Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him." Notice the action words—taste, see, take refuge. These aren't passive activities. You can't taste something by reading the menu or watching someone else eat. David is challenging us to move beyond what we've been told and step into personal experience. The question is: are we living on a faith diet of other people's testimonies, or have we actually tasted God's goodness ourselves?
Think about the stories that shaped your early faith—the ones from parents, youth leaders, or pastors who told you God is faithful, loving, and good. Those stories matter, and they're often what sustain us until we face our own crossroads. But eventually, life brings a moment when inherited answers aren't enough. A crisis hits, doubt creeps in, or circumstances challenge everything we thought we knew. That's when we discover whether our faith is built on what we've been told or what we've tested. God doesn't want us to live our entire lives on secondhand faith. He's inviting us to taste and see for ourselves.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come to You honestly today, acknowledging that so much of what I believe about You came from other people.
I was taught You are good, faithful, and trustworthy, and I'm grateful for those who planted these seeds in my life. But I also recognize that I've been living on borrowed faith, repeating words I've heard without truly testing them in my own experience.
I confess that sometimes I quote verses about Your goodness without actually believing them in my circumstances. I'm afraid to taste and see because what if I'm disappointed? What if I take refuge in You and You don't show up the way I need You to?
Yet here I am, choosing to trust you invitation. I want to move beyond inherited faith and discover Your goodness for myself.
Help me to stop managing my life alone and actually run to You when trouble comes. Give me courage to test what I say I believe.
I thank You that You're not offended by my doubts or afraid of my questions. You're confident enough in Your own goodness to invite me to prove it for myself.
Transform my faith from something I learned in childhood into something I'm discovering right now.
Let me taste Your goodness in real ways—in my anxieties, my relationships, my uncertainties, and my daily struggles. I don't want to just survive on stories of what You did for David or for my grandmother. I want my own testimony of Your faithfulness.
In Jesus' name, who came so we could personally know the Father, Amen.
Journaling Prompts
Describe a time when your inherited beliefs about God were tested by real-life circumstances. What happened, and did you discover God's goodness for yourself, or did you feel abandoned by what you'd been told?
Are you afraid that if you truly test God, He might not come through? Explore what that fear reveals about the gap between what you say you believe and what you actually trust.
How would your faith be different if you couldn't quote any verse, recall any sermon, or reference any Christian book—if all you had was your personal experience with God? Would your faith be stronger or weaker?
The gap between inherited faith and tested faith is where real relationship with God begins. We can be grateful for the faith that was handed down to us while also being honest that we need more than borrowed beliefs to sustain us. God is inviting you to taste and see for yourself—not because what you've been told is wrong, but because He wants you to know Him personally, not just know about Him.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
