Bible Verse

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.(NIV)

Every morning, we make a choice, even if we do not always realize we are making it. We either wake up living as the new person God says we are, or we quietly slip back into acting like the old version of ourselves that was supposed to stay buried. This devotional and prayer will help us face that choice honestly, because how we answer it shapes everything about the way we live, love, and treat the people around us.

Short Devotional

Paul, who wrote the book of Colossians, made something very clear: the old version of you is dead. That means the person once ruled by anger, bitterness, and fear is not who you are anymore. But here is the hard question we all have to sit with: if that old self is truly gone, why do so many of us keep living like it never left?

Think about it this way. Every time we snap at someone we love, replay old grudges in our heads, or tell ourselves we are not worth much, we are reaching into a closet full of clothes that no longer belong to us. The invitation in Colossians 3 is not to try harder, but to remember who we already are, and to let that truth be the very first thing we put on every single morning.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being right here with me in this moment.

I come to You honest about something I do not always want to admit. I keep going back to old habits, old reactions, and old ways of seeing myself, even though You have already made me new.

Your Word says I am chosen, holy, and deeply loved by You. But some days I do not live like it. I reach for bitterness instead of forgiveness, and anger instead of patience.

Help me to remember who I truly am in You. Remind me again every morning that my old self is gone, and that I do not have to keep carrying what You already put away for good.

Teach me to put on compassion, kindness, and humility, not because I am trying to earn Your love, but because I already have it.

Where I have been running back to old patterns, give me the strength to stop. Where I have been hard on others or hard on myself, give me the grace to choose a better way today.

I trust that You are not finished with me. Thank You for Your patience with me.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • When you woke up this morning, which version of yourself showed up: the old one or the new one? What does your answer tell you about where your heart is right now?

  • Think about a habit, reaction, or way of thinking that keeps coming back even though you know it does not belong to you anymore. What makes it so easy to keep going back to it?

  • If someone who knew you well was watching your life this week, which "clothes" would they say you were wearing: the ones from your old self or the ones described in today’s verse

The truth is, growth does not happen all at once, and God is not surprised by how often we struggle to leave the old self behind. What matters is that we keep choosing, one morning at a time, to dress ourselves in who we truly are. You are chosen, you are loved, and every single day is a brand new chance to live like it.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.

God Bless!
