Have you ever stopped doing something good right before it was about to matter? Maybe you gave up on a struggling friendship, walked away from serving at church, or stopped praying for someone just when God was about to move. Today we're going to look at why so many of us quit doing good right before the breakthrough happens, and how the enemy works overtime to make us exhausted at the exact moment when we're closest to seeing the harvest.
Short Devotional
There's a famous story about gold miners during the California Gold Rush who would dig for weeks, find nothing, and then sell their claim for pennies. The new owner would often strike gold within just a few feet of where the previous miner stopped digging. What made the difference wasn't skill or luck—it was simply the willingness to keep going when everything looked hopeless. Notice in today’s verse, Paul doesn't say "if it gets easier" or "if people appreciate you"—he says "if we do not give up." That's because the greatest battle happens right before the breakthrough.
Think about the relationships where you've invested years of love, the ministries where you've served faithfully, the people you've been praying for without seeing change. What if you're actually closer to harvest than you've ever been, but the exhaustion you feel is a sign that something is about to shift? The enemy doesn't waste energy attacking things that don't matter. When you feel the strongest urge to quit, it might mean you're standing three feet from gold.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father, I come to You feeling tired in ways I don't always have words for.
You see the good things I've been doing—the relationships I've invested in, the ways I've tried to serve, the prayers I've lifted up over and over.
Some days it feels like nothing is changing, and I wonder if any of it matters. I confess that I've been tempted to quit, to walk away, to stop caring because the harvest seems so far off.
But Your Word reminds me that I will reap at the proper time if I don't give up. Help me trust Your timing, even when I can't see what You're doing.
I recognize that this weariness might actually mean I'm close to breakthrough, and the enemy is working to make me quit right before You move.
Give me strength to take one more step, to love one more time, to serve one more day. Renew my heart when discouragement whispers that it's pointless.
Thank You that my labor in You is never wasted, even when I can't see the results yet.
I ask for supernatural endurance to keep doing good, knowing that the harvest is coming.
In Jesus's powerful name, Amen.
Journaling Prompts
Where in your life are you most tempted to quit doing good right now, and what would it look like to keep going for just one more season?
Can you identify a time when you stopped doing something good and later discovered you were closer to breakthrough than you realized? What did that teach you?
Imagine yourself on the other side of this season, looking back—what would you tell your current self about why it mattered that you didn't give up?
The difference between people who see breakthrough and people who don't often comes down to one decision: to keep going when everything in them wants to stop. You're not alone in your exhaustion, and your weariness doesn't mean you're failing—it might actually mean you're exactly where God needs you to be. Keep sowing, keep serving, keep loving, because the harvest is closer than you think.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
