Today, we're going to be looking at how we can stay calm when things around us are not. Remember the story of Jesus and His disciples on the boat? While waves crashed and wind howled, Jesus was asleep on a cushion. His disciples couldn't believe it! "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" they cried out. But Jesus wasn't worried at all. He got up, told the storm to be quiet, and then asked his disciples why they were so afraid.

This story tells us so much about dealing with our own storms. We often panic when problems come our way – money troubles, health scares, family issues, or work stress. We run around trying to fix everything ourselves, losing sleep and peace along the way. But what if we took a lesson from Jesus? What if we remembered His words in John 14:27 and accepted His gift of peace that's different from anything the world can give? The next time life gets stormy, let's remember who's in our boat and pray for that special kind of peace.

Read about Jesus sleeping during a storm in Mark 4:35-41.

Let's Pray

Peaceful Father,

Thank you for being with me right now. I need to feel your presence as I face the storms in my life. So many times I've let worry take over, forgetting that you are right here with me in my boat.

Lord, I think about how Jesus slept peacefully during that terrible storm, and I long for that kind of trust. You've promised me peace – not the temporary kind that depends on perfect circumstances, but a deep, lasting peace that comes only from you. "I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid." Thank you for this promise.

I admit that I struggle to stay calm when problems arise. My first reaction is often fear, not faith. Help me to respond differently. When bills pile up, when relationships get hard, when health concerns appear, or when the future seems uncertain, remind me that you are not panicking.

Thank you for being the God who can calm any storm with just a word. Help me to trust your power and your love more than I trust my fears. Give me the courage to rest in your peace even when everything around me suggests I should worry.

I ask for your peace to guard my heart and mind today. In Jesus' name, I claim the gift of peace you've promised me.

Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • How have you experienced the difference between the world's temporary peace and Christ's lasting peace?

  • What "peace substitutes" do you sometimes pursue instead of Christ's true peace?

  • How might your experience of divine peace become a witness to others who are searching for meaning and stability?

May we all remember that true peace isn't found in perfect circumstances but in the perfect Savior who rides with us through every storm. As we face this week's challenges, let's try to picture Jesus calmly resting in our boat, unworried about the waves that frighten us so much. God's peace is always available to us—we just need to quiet our hearts enough to receive it. We pray that you will experience this special kind of peace in whatever situation you face today.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace

God Bless!
