When we walk into a dark room, our eyes don't adjust right away. We stand still, we wait, and slowly—shapes begin to appear. The same is true for our souls. Seeing what God is doing takes time, patience, and a willingness to stay in the waiting long enough for our vision to change. Praying for trained eyes matters because we often give up looking before our sight has fully developed.
Short Devotional
Think about the last time you stepped outside on a clear night. At first, you might see only a few stars. But if you stay there—five minutes, ten minutes—suddenly the sky fills with lights that were invisible just moments before. Your eyes didn't create those stars. They were always there. Your eyes simply needed time to adjust.
Our hearts work the same way. We want to see God moving right now, and when we can't, we assume He isn't there. But what if the problem isn't God's absence? What if the problem is that our spiritual vision hasn't had enough time to adjust? The hard seasons, the waiting rooms, the long nights—these aren't wasted time. They are training grounds where our souls learn to perceive what our untrained eyes could never see. As we move into prayer, let's ask God to give us the patience to let our vision develop.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come before You right now, grateful that You see me even when I struggle to see You. You are always present, always faithfully working, even in the seasons when my eyes haven't adjusted to what You're doing.
I confess that I often want instant clarity. I want to understand Your plan right away. But Your Word reminds me through the prophet Micah to watch in hope for You, to wait for You, my God and Savior—because You will hear me.
Lord, I ask for trained eyes. Give me the patience to stay in the in the moment long enough for my spiritual vision to change. Help me resist the urge to run toward easier lights when Your work requires deeper sight.
I know that some things can only be seen after time has reshaped how I look. Forgive me for the moments I gave up too soon, assuming You were absent when I simply hadn't learned to recognize Your presence yet.
Thank You for every season that has stretched my ability to perceive You—even the painful ones, even the confusing ones.
I trust that You are forming something in me that could not develop any other way. I am grateful that You are patient with my slow-adjusting soul.
Strengthen me to keep watching. Give me confidence that what I cannot yet see is still real. I place my hope not in my own understanding but in Your faithful, unchanging character.
I pray this in the powerful name of Jesus, who is the Light of the world.
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
When was a time you looked back and realized God had been working in a situation where, at the time, you couldn't see Him at all? What changed in your perception?
If spiritual vision takes time to develop, what might be happening in this current season that your eyes aren't trained to see yet?
What would it look like for you to trust that God is present in a situation where you have zero visible evidence right now?
Learning to see what God is doing rarely happens overnight—it takes time, stillness, and a willingness to remain in the waiting. May this week be a season where your spiritual vision grows sharper, not because the darkness lifted, but because your eyes finally adjusted. We look forward to walking with you again as we continue learning to see God more clearly.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
