There is a moment in a lot of people's lives when a career stops being something they do and starts being something that owns them — and most of the time, they don't even see it happening. This devotional is about that moment: how ambition can quietly replace God as the thing we wake up for, plan around, and sacrifice everything to protect. We are going to look honestly at where we have placed our trust and invite God back into a space that was always meant to be His.
Short Devotional
In Luke 12:16–21, Jesus told a story about a man who worked hard, built much, and planned carefully without ever stopping to ask God what any of it was actually for. He filled his barns, secured his future, and called it success, but God called it foolishness. Not because the man worked hard, but because he built an entire life as if God had no say in any of it.
That story is a mirror for anyone who has used the word "blessed" to describe a promotion while knowing deep down that the job has been getting more time, energy, and devotion than God has. Here is the question worth sitting with: at what point did the career become the plan and God become the footnote? The prayer that follows is not about asking God to slow down your success but about asking Him to take back the seat at the center of your life that a career has been slowly sliding into.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come before You right now, knowing You see everything about my life — including the places I have quietly let my career take Your place.
I am grateful that You are a God who does not give up on me, even when I have traded my time with You for longer hours and bigger titles.
Forgive me for the moments I allowed ambition to silence Your voice in my life. Forgive me for the times I told myself that working harder was the same as trusting You more.
Your Word reminds me that I cannot serve two masters, and I confess that my job has sometimes been the master I served most faithfully.
Today, I choose You. I ask You to help me see my career the way You see it, as a tool in Your hands, not a throne for my ego.
Give me the wisdom to know when to say no. Give me the courage to protect what matters most — my family, my integrity, and my walk with You.
I trust that You have a plan for my life that does not require me to lose myself to build it.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Journaling Prompts
Think about the last big career decision you made — did you pray about it first, or did you make the decision and then ask God to bless it afterward, and what does that order honestly reveal about who was leading?
If your calendar and your phone screen time from the last 30 days were the only evidence someone had about what matters most to you, what conclusion would they reach?
If God asked you today to walk away from a major career opportunity because it would cost you your family, your integrity, or your closeness with Him — would you do it, and what does your honest answer tell you about who your real master is?
No matter where we find ourselves on the career ladder right now, today is a good day to check who has actually been holding the ladder up. God doesn't call us to achieve less. He calls us to anchor everything we build in Him first, so that what we build actually lasts. Keep reflecting honestly, keep bringing it all to God, and pay close attention to what He does when He is truly the One leading the way.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
