Some of the bravest moments in life are not when we have everything figured out — they are when we choose to trust God right in the middle of the confusion. There is something God invites us into that goes against everything our feelings tell us to do: praising Him before we fully understand what He is doing. This devotional and prayer are about learning to lift our hearts to God when the wreckage is still fresh, because that kind of faith may be the most honest and powerful thing we ever offer Him.
Short Devotional
The writer of Psalm 118 does not arrive at praise easily — he earns it. Earlier in the same chapter, he describes being completely surrounded by enemies, pressed in on every side, and pushed to the very edge of collapse. He even acknowledges that God allowed him to be severely tested. Most people, after going through something that painful, would need years before they could say anything good about it. But this psalmist — right there, with the bruises still fresh — gathered himself and began to praise God, not because the pain was gone, but because he had decided that God was still God even in the middle of it.
What makes that kind of praise so different is that it is not based on what we can see — it is based on what we know to be true about who God is. It raises a hard question that we all need to sit with: Can we really praise God while we are still standing in the ruins of what life just cost us? When we choose to do that, something powerful happens — not always in our circumstances, but deep inside us — and it opens a door for God to meet us exactly where we are.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being present with me right now, even in this difficult moment.
There are days when my life feels broken, and I cannot find a reason to celebrate. But Your Word says this is the day You have made — and I choose to trust that, even when it is hard.
Help me to stop waiting for good news before I choose to praise You. Teach me that my praise does not have to wait for things to get better — real faith praises You in the middle of the mess.
I confess that I have allowed my pain to silence me before You. Forgive me for pulling away from You when life hurt the most, instead of running closer to You.
Father, give me the courage to rejoice before I have all the answers. Let my trust in You rise louder than my doubt, and let my praise come up out of the places that are still broken and healing.
Thank You for working in every part of my story, even the parts I do not understand.
You are faithful, and You will not waste a single moment of my pain.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
Journaling Prompts
Think about a time when life felt like ruins around you — did you praise God during that season, or did you wait until things got better, and what does that tell you about where your trust really was?
What is one thing in your life right now that you have been waiting to "fix" before you allow yourself to feel joy, and what would it look like to release that to God today?
Imagine someone you love going through a devastating loss and choosing to praise God right in the middle of it — what would you think of them, and what would it mean if you chose to do the same thing in your own life?
Choosing to praise God before the pieces fall into place is one of the hardest and most beautiful things a person can do — and it starts with just one honest, trusting step toward Him. No matter what today looks like for you, you are never too far into the ruins for God to meet you right where you are. Next time, we will dig into another truth from God's Word that will challenge you, encourage you, and remind you that you were never meant to carry any of this alone.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
