We've all been there—standing in the kitchen or sitting in the living room, ready to prove our point in a disagreement with our spouse. Our mind races with all the reasons we're right, and we can feel the argument building inside us. But here's something worth thinking about: what if winning the argument means losing something far more valuable? Today, we're going to look at what it means to choose peace over being right in our marriages, and how this choice actually makes us more like God. This matters because our homes should be places where love grows, not where small disagreements turn into big walls between us and the person we promised to love forever.

Short Devotional

Jesus teaches us in the Sermon on the Mount that peacemakers will be called children of God. Think about that for a moment—when we choose to make peace instead of making our point, we're actually acting like our Heavenly Father. God didn't demand to be proven right when we messed up. Instead, He chose to send Jesus to build a bridge back to us. That's what real love does.

In marriage, we face this choice every single day. Our spouse loads the dishwasher differently than we would. They forget to pick something up from the store. They say something that rubs us the wrong way. We could be right about all of it, but being right doesn't keep our marriage strong. Jesus shows us a better way—one where we value our relationship more than our pride. When we let go of small things and choose peace, we're building a home that looks like God's kingdom, where love is more important than being correct.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I come to You today knowing that You see every moment in my marriage—the good ones and the hard ones. Thank You for loving me even when I'm difficult, even when I insist on being right.

Lord, I confess that sometimes I care more about winning an argument than keeping peace with my spouse. I hold onto small things and let them grow into big walls between us.

Help me to remember that You blessed the peacemakers and called them Your children. I want to be like You, Father. I want to choose love over being right.

When my spouse and I disagree, give me the wisdom to know when something truly matters and when I'm just protecting my pride. Teach me to see my marriage the way You see it—as something precious worth protecting.

Help me to pause before I speak, to think before I react, and to choose words that build up instead of tear down. Lord, when I feel that familiar feeling rising up inside me, that need to prove I'm right, remind me of today’s verse and what it means to make peace.

Thank You for the gift of my marriage. Thank You for my spouse, even in moments when we don't see eye to eye. Give us both humble hearts that seek peace more than victory.

In the powerful name of Jesus, who made peace between us and You, I pray.

Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • Think about the last argument you had with your spouse. Looking back now, was being right worth the tension it created? What would choosing peace have looked like in that moment?

  • Imagine your marriage five years from now. If you keep choosing to be right over choosing peace, what will your relationship look like? Now imagine if you consistently chose peace instead.

  • What are three small things that regularly cause friction in your marriage? Why do these things bother you so much? Are they really worth fighting about?

Marriage gives us daily opportunities to practice becoming more like Jesus, and choosing peace when we could choose pride is one of the most powerful ways we do that. Remember, God isn't asking us to ignore real problems or never share our feelings—He's inviting us to love our spouse more than we love being right. May this week bring fresh chances to build peace in your home and to reflect God's heart to the person you love most.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.

God Bless!
