Sometimes we think we have life figured out. We make plans, trust our gut feelings, and believe our way is the best way. But what happens when our own thinking leads us down the wrong path? This devotional looks at a powerful truth from Proverbs that challenges us to step back from our own wisdom and trust in something greater. We'll explore what it means to be humble enough to admit we don't have all the answers, and we'll pray for God's guidance when our own understanding falls short. This prayer is important because it helps us find true wisdom that comes from above, not from our own limited view of the world.
Short Devotional
We live in a world that tells us to trust ourselves completely. "Follow your heart," people say, or "You know what's best for you." While confidence is good, there's a big difference between healthy confidence and thinking we never need help or advice from anyone else. When we become too sure of our own thoughts and ideas, we can miss important truths that others see clearly. We might ignore wise advice, skip asking for help, or make choices that seem right to us but hurt us later.
The Bible teaches us that real wisdom starts with understanding how much we don't know. It's like the difference between a small flashlight and the sun – our understanding can only light up a tiny area, but God sees everything clearly. When we stay humble and ask for His guidance, we can avoid many mistakes and find better paths than we could have chosen on our own. This doesn't mean we should never think for ourselves, but it means we should always be willing to listen and learn from God and the wise people He puts in our lives.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come to You knowing that You are always with me, even when I forget to ask for Your help. I admit that sometimes I think I know exactly what to do, and I make decisions without stopping to pray or seek Your wisdom.
Your Word reminds me not to be wise in my own eyes, but to fear You and turn away from evil, knowing this will bring health to my body and nourishment to my bones.
Father, I confess that my pride often gets in the way of receiving good advice. I sometimes ignore the wise counsel of others because I want to do things my way.
Help me to have a humble heart that's quick to listen and slow to assume I'm always right. When friends, family, or mentors try to guide me, give me ears to hear and wisdom to know when their words come from You.
I'm grateful that You never grow tired of my questions or frustrated when I need direction. Thank You for being patient with me when I make mistakes because I trusted my own understanding instead of Yours.
Please give me the strength to pause before making big decisions, to pray first, and to seek Your will above my own desires.
Help me to fear You in the right way – not with terror, but with deep respect for who You are and trust in Your perfect love.
Guide my steps today and always, and help me turn away from anything that would harm me or others.
I trust in Your faithfulness and pray all of this in the powerful name of Jesus.
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
Think about a time when you made a decision based only on your own thinking. What happened, and what would you do differently now?
What areas of your life do you find it hardest to ask for advice or admit you might be wrong?
Who are the wise people in your life that God might use to guide you, and how can you be more open to their input?
Learning to trust God's wisdom over our own takes practice, but it's one of the most freeing things we can do. When we stop carrying the weight of having to be right all the time, we can relax and let God lead us to better places than we could find alone. Remember that asking for help isn't a sign of weakness – it's a sign of wisdom. We're here with you on this path of growing in humility and trust, and we can't wait to continue learning together in our next newsletter.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace
God Bless!
