Today, we're going to be talking about the tricky subject of money and how it affects our relationships. When we owe money to friends or family, it can create tension, awkwardness, and even break trust. Romans teaches us to "owe nothing to anyone—except love." This wisdom reminds us that while financial debts should be paid and settled, our obligation to love one another is the one debt that remains open. Money problems can easily damage the relationships that matter most to us, turning loved ones into creditors and changing how we feel when we see them.

What happens to a friendship when money gets involved? Many of us have experienced the strain that comes when someone owes us money or when we can't repay what we've borrowed. These situations test our character and can reveal what we value most. God's guidance about owing nothing helps protect our relationships from the harm that unpaid debts can cause. When we keep our financial affairs in order, we remove barriers to loving others freely. But even when money issues arise, we're still called to treat each other with love and respect. Let's ask ourselves: "Are there any financial obligations affecting my ability to love someone well?" Our relationships are too valuable to be damaged by money matters that can be addressed with honesty and care. Let's pray about handling both our finances and our relationships with wisdom.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being with me today. I know You care about every part of my life, including my finances and relationships.

I admit that money matters often cause me stress, especially when they involve people I care about. When I owe money to others or when others owe me, it creates tension that makes it hard to show love the way You want me to.

Lord, I need Your help with any financial debts I have. Give me the discipline to pay what I owe and the courage to have honest conversations about money. When I can't repay right away, help me communicate openly rather than avoiding people or making promises I can't keep.

For those who owe me money, help me be patient and understanding. Guard my heart against bitterness or keeping score. Remind me that relationships are more valuable than dollars.

Thank You for providing for my needs even when money is tight. I'm grateful that You see my struggles and never leave me to face them alone.

Show me how to handle money wisely so it doesn't become a barrier between me and others. When financial problems come up, help me remember that how I treat people matters more than the money involved.

I ask for healing in relationships that have been damaged by financial issues. Restore trust where it's been broken and help me value people over possessions.

I trust that as I follow Your guidance to owe nothing except love, my relationships will grow stronger.

In Jesus' name, I pray with confidence that You will help me balance financial responsibility with loving others well.

Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • Has borrowing or lending money ever changed one of your relationships? Write about what happened and how you might handle it differently now.

  • Consider a time when you chose to forgive a debt someone owed you. How did it affect your relationship and your own heart?

  • How might your approach to money matters reflect your understanding of God's character and values?

Money matters can create invisible walls between us and the people we care about most. When we follow God's guidance to "owe nothing except love," we protect our relationships from the damage that financial issues can cause. Keeping our money dealings clear and honest helps us maintain trust and openness with others. Remember that how we handle both our finances and our hearts determines the health of our most important relationships.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace

God Bless!
