We've all been there—sitting across from someone we care about, knowing we need to say something true but hard. Our hearts start beating faster. We rehearse softer versions in our heads. Maybe we convince ourselves that saying nothing is the loving thing to do. But what if our silence isn't actually love at all? What if the "peace" we're keeping is really just fear wearing a Christian mask?
Today, we're going to look at a hard truth from the apostle Paul that challenges everything we think about being kind, loving Christians. This prayer matters because sometimes the most loving thing we can do is risk being uncomfortable.
Short Devotional
Jesus wasn't always nice. He called religious leaders "whitewashed tombs" and flipped tables in the temple. He told his closest friends when they were wrong, even when it hurt their feelings. Paul followed this example in his letter to the Galatians, writing some of the strongest words in the entire New Testament because false teachers were leading people away from the truth. He didn't soften his message to keep everyone happy. Instead, he asked a piercing question: "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?"
Here's what we need to wrestle with: How many times have we stayed quiet about the truth because we didn't want to lose a friendship? How often do we smile and nod when someone we love is headed toward harm, telling ourselves we're being "gracious"? Real love tells the truth, even when our voices shake. Real love risks rejection to protect someone from danger. The question isn't whether we'll face moments where truth and approval clash—we will. The question is: whose approval matters more? When we choose silence to keep people liking us, we might be choosing their temporary comfort over their eternal good. That's not grace. That's fear. And it's time we bring that fear to God in prayer.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come before You with an honest heart, admitting that I've confused being nice with being like Jesus. I've stayed silent when I should have spoken. I've watched people I love walk toward danger, and I've said nothing because I was afraid they'd be angry with me. I've softened Your truth to keep friendships comfortable.
Forgive me for choosing human approval over faithfulness to You.
God, You see the relationships in my life where I'm avoiding hard conversations right now. You know the truths I'm holding back because I fear rejection.
I confess that I've made an idol out of being liked. I've served the opinions of people instead of serving You alone. Paul said that trying to please people disqualifies us from being Your servants, and I feel the weight of that truth.
Give me courage to speak when You call me to speak. Help me tell the truth wrapped in genuine love, not in anger or self-righteousness.
Show me the difference between being harsh and being honest. Let me trust that You care more about people's souls than their temporary comfort, and that real love risks being uncomfortable.
Thank You for never staying silent about my sin. Thank You for loving me enough to tell me the truth, even when it hurts. Help me love others the same way.
Give me wisdom to know when to speak and when to listen. Make me brave enough to lose approval if it means staying faithful to You.
I ask this in the powerful name of Jesus, who spoke truth even when it cost You everything.
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
Think about a recent conversation where you stayed silent about something true because you didn't want conflict. What were you really afraid would happen if you spoke up?
Imagine Jesus sitting across from someone you love who's making destructive choices. What do you think He would say to them? Now ask yourself: why haven't you said something similar?
Who in your life has loved you enough to tell you a hard truth? How did that feel at the time, and how do you feel about it now? What does that teach you about real love?
Growth happens when we let God challenge the comfortable lies we've believed about ourselves. Choosing truth over approval won't always feel good at first, but it's the path to real freedom and authentic relationships. God is faithful to give you the courage you need for every conversation He calls you to have. Keep bringing your fears to Him, and watch how He transforms your people-pleasing into genuine, brave love that looks more like Jesus every day.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
