Have you ever wondered why your kids roll their eyes when you talk about trusting God to provide? Maybe it's not because they don't believe in God. Maybe it's because they've watched you say you trust Him while the bills pile up unopened on the counter, the checkbook hasn't been balanced in months, and every financial decision feels like a scramble instead of a plan. We often think our money problems come from not having enough, but what if the real issue is how carelessly we handle what's already in our hands? This is about more than budgets and bank accounts—it's about whether our children will grow up believing God is faithful or learning to see Him as someone we mention on Sundays but don't actually trust during the week.
Short Devotional
Notice in today’s verse didn't say "empty hands" or "unlucky hands"—Solomon said lazy hands. There's a difference between not having much and being sloppy with what you do have. When we avoid looking at our spending, ignore the credit card statements, or refuse to make a simple plan for our money, we're not being faithful stewards—we're being lazy. And our families are watching.
Here's the hard truth: every time we blame God for not providing while refusing to open the bills, track our spending, or stop the mindless shopping, we teach our loved ones that God isn't reliable. They see the stress. They hear the arguments. They feel the anxiety. But they also see that we're not doing the basic work of managing what He's already given. How can they trust a God we claim provides when we won't do our part? Diligence in the small things—knowing where money goes, making a plan, following through—isn't about earning God's favor. It's about honoring what He's entrusted to us and showing our families what real faith looks like.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come before You today with an honest heart. You know everything about my financial situation—the numbers I'm afraid to look at, the statements I've been avoiding, and the mess I've let things become.
I confess that I've been lazy with what You've given me. I've blamed my struggles on not having enough when the truth is I haven't been faithful with what's already in my hands.
Lord, I'm sorry for the times I've prayed for provision while leaving bills unopened and spending without thinking. I'm sorry for how my financial carelessness has affected my family.
My children have watched me stress and worry, and I've unintentionally taught them that You aren't trustworthy when really, I'm the one who hasn't been trustworthy with Your blessings.
Thank You for not giving up on me. Thank You for this wake-up call. You remind me that diligent hands bring blessing, and I want to have diligent hands, Father.
I want to steward every dollar wisely, track every expense faithfully, and make decisions that honor You.
Give me the courage to face the truth about my finances today. Give me the discipline to create a plan and stick to it. Help me stop avoiding and start managing.
Let my family see real change in me—not perfection, but faithfulness. Let them witness what it looks like when someone truly trusts You enough to do their part.
I pray this in the mighty name of Jesus, believing You will give me the strength to start today.
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
If God asked you today, "What have you done with what I've already given you?" what would your honest answer be?
Where have you confused trusting God with avoiding responsibility, and how has this confusion affected your witness to those watching your life?
How do you think your children or spouse would describe your relationship with money right now? What would you want them to say instead?
God hasn't brought this to your attention to shame you—He's inviting you into something better. Starting today, you can choose diligent hands over lazy ones, and watch how faithful stewardship changes not just your bank account, but your entire family's understanding of who God is. The next time we gather, we'll continue exploring how God transforms our everyday choices into worship.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
