Have you ever caught yourself refusing to take a step forward until you had every piece of information lined up perfectly? We live in a time where we can Google anything in seconds, watch tutorial videos before trying something new, and read endless reviews before making a purchase. This access to unlimited information has trained us to believe we should never move without complete understanding. But what happens when this same mindset creeps into our relationship with God? Today we're going to wrestle with a hard truth: our insistence on knowing everything before trusting might actually be the very thing keeping us from experiencing God's best for our lives.
Short Devotional
The Israelites had this same struggle in the wilderness. They wanted to know exactly where they were going, how long it would take, and what the plan was before they would trust Moses—and ultimately God. Their demand for information became more important than their obedience. We do the same thing. We pray for direction, then immediately open our laptops to research every possible outcome, consult everyone we know, and analyze data until we feel we've eliminated all risk. But here's the uncomfortable question: if we won't move until we understand everything, are we really trusting God, or are we just trusting our own research?
Today’s verse tells us to trust God with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding. Notice it doesn't say "don't use understanding"—it says don't lean on it, don't put your full weight on it as your foundation. The moment we make information our requirement for trust, we've switched gods. We're bowing to the golden calf of complete clarity instead of the living God who often calls us forward with just enough light for the next step. Let's bring this tension honestly to God in prayer.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come before You acknowledging that You are the Maker of heaven and earth, the One who knows all things.
I confess that I have made information into an idol. I have demanded to understand before I'm willing to trust. I've treated my need for complete clarity as wisdom when it's really been fear dressed up in research.
Forgive me for the countless times I've delayed obedience because I wanted more data, more confirmation, more certainty.
Lord, I recognize that my addiction to information reveals where my trust actually lies. When I won't move forward without understanding every detail, I'm leaning on my own understanding instead of trusting You with all my heart.
I've made Google searches more authoritative than Your voice. I've let the opinions of strangers on the internet carry more weight than Your promises in Scripture.
Thank You for being patient with me. Thank You for the times You've waited while I gathered my research, yet still welcomed me when I finally came back to ask for Your direction.
I'm grateful that You don't condemn my questions, but You also won't let me hide behind them forever.
I ask for the courage to submit all my ways to You—even the decisions I don't fully understand yet. Give me the strength to take the next step with just the light You've provided, not the floodlight I'm demanding.
Help me remember that a straight path doesn't mean a fully explained path.
In the powerful name of Jesus, who trusted the Father completely even when the road led to the cross, Amen.
Journaling Prompts
What decision are you currently delaying because you're waiting for more information, and what would it look like to trust God enough to move forward with what you already know?
Think about the last time you spent hours researching something instead of praying about it—what were you really afraid would happen if you trusted God without complete understanding?
If God gave you only one piece of direction for your current situation (like "go" or "wait" or "forgive"), would that be enough for you, or would you immediately ask for more details?
God isn't asking you to turn off your brain or ignore wisdom. He's asking you to stop making information your god. This week, pay attention to where you're demanding complete understanding before you'll trust, and practice submitting just one decision to God without needing all the answers first. Remember, He promises to make your paths straight—not fully explained.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
