Waiting feels hard because we often think it means doing nothing. We sit in traffic, stand in line at the store, or count down days until something important happens. But what if waiting could be something different? What if instead of feeling stuck, we could feel purposeful even while we wait?
The Bible teaches us about a special kind of waiting that changes everything. In Hebrew, there's a word called qavah that means something much more active than our everyday waiting. Think about a night guard watching for the first light of morning - he's not sleeping or ignoring his job. He's alert, ready, and fully focused on what's coming. Consider a woman expecting a baby - she doesn't pretend nothing is happening for nine months. She prepares, plans, and stays aware of every change in her body. Picture a farmer who plants seeds - he doesn't walk away and forget about his field. He waters, tends, and watches for the first green shoots to appear. This kind of waiting involves our whole heart, mind, and body working together toward something good that God has planned.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come to You knowing that You are here with me right now. You see everything I'm going through, and You understand the places in my life where I'm waiting for answers, healing, or change.
Help me learn what it means to wait like the psalmist did - with my whole soul engaged and my hope firmly planted in Your promises.
I confess that waiting is hard for me. Sometimes I get impatient and try to rush ahead of Your timing. Other times I feel like giving up when things don't happen as quickly as I want.
Forgive me for the moments when I've doubted Your goodness or questioned whether You really care about my specific situation and needs.
Thank You for being a God who always keeps His promises. Thank You for giving me Your word as a strong anchor for my hope when everything else feels uncertain and shaky.
Help me remember that Your timing is always perfect, even when I can't see the bigger picture You're painting.
Teach me to wait actively, like a night watchman eagerly looking for dawn or a farmer carefully tending his field.
Show me how to use this waiting time to grow closer to You, to serve others around me, and to prepare my heart for what You have planned.
Give me the strength to keep trusting when waiting feels long and hope when circumstances look discouraging.
I believe You are working even when I can't see it.
In Jesus' mighty name,
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
What situation in your life requires the most patience right now? Write about how you've been handling this waiting period and what emotions come up for you.
Think about a time when God's timing was different from yours, but it worked out well in the end. What did you learn about trusting His schedule rather than your own?
Consider the phrase "in his word I put my hope." Which Bible promises could you memorize and hold onto during difficult waiting periods in your life?
Remember that every season of waiting in your life has a purpose, even when that purpose isn't clear yet. God uses these times to shape your character, deepen your faith, and prepare you for what He has ahead. Your waiting doesn't have to be wasted time - it can become watching time, growing time, and trusting time. We're praying that this week brings you fresh hope and renewed strength as you learn to wait with your whole heart engaged.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace
God Bless!
