Sometimes the smallest choices reveal the biggest truths about our hearts. Every day, we face countless moments where we can choose between what's easy for us or what's good for someone else. These moments might seem small, like letting someone go first in line or really listening when someone needs to talk. But these everyday decisions show whether we truly have the heart of Jesus. Today's devotional and prayer will help us understand how putting others first changes everything about how we live and love.

Short Devotional

Jesus changed everything about how we think about relationships and daily choices. He showed us that real greatness comes from serving others, not from getting what we want. When we look at how Jesus lived, we see someone who constantly put other people's needs before His own comfort. He gave up sleep to heal the sick, spent time with people others ignored, and always looked for ways to help rather than be helped.

The challenge for us is learning to ask a different question in our everyday moments. Instead of asking "What do I want?" or "What's easiest for me?", we can learn to ask "How can I help the person in front of me?" This simple question changes how we drive in traffic, how we treat our family members, and how we respond when someone interrupts our plans. When we start thinking this way, we begin to see opportunities to love people that we never noticed before. It's not always easy, but it's how we grow to become more like Jesus every single day.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I come to You knowing that You see every choice I make and every thought in my heart. Thank You for loving me so completely and for showing me through Jesus what it means to truly care for others.

I confess that too often I choose what's convenient for me instead of what's best for the people around me.

In Your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus - this verse challenges me because I realize how much I still think about myself first.

Help me change the way I think about my daily decisions. When I'm rushing and someone needs help, give me the patience to stop and serve them. When my family asks for my attention and I'm tired, help me choose love over my own comfort.

Show me the people You've placed in my life who need encouragement, kindness, or just someone to really listen to them. Change my heart so that I naturally look for ways to put others first instead of always protecting my own time and energy.

I'm grateful that You never gave up on me, even when I was selfish and difficult to love. Thank You for the example of Jesus, who gave up everything to serve us.

Fill me with Your Spirit so I can love people the way You love me. Help me see every interaction as a chance to show Your heart to someone who needs it.

Give me strength when serving others feels hard, and remind me that You're always working in me to make me more like Jesus.

In Jesus' powerful name, Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • When someone interrupts your plans or asks for your time unexpectedly, what emotions do you usually feel, and what do those feelings reveal about your heart?

  • Who is one person in your life that you tend to take for granted, and what are three practical ways you could put their needs before your own this week?

  • What fears or concerns make it difficult for you to put others first, and how do you think God wants to help you overcome those barriers?

Learning to put others first is a lifelong adventure that transforms both our hearts and our relationships. God is patient with us as we grow in this area, celebrating every small step we take toward becoming more like Jesus. The beautiful truth is that when we choose to serve others, we often find more joy and peace than when we focus only on ourselves. Keep asking that simple question - "How can I help?" - and watch how God uses your willing heart to bring His love into everyday moments.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace

God Bless!
