We all love making plans. Marking calendars, setting goals, and dreaming about what's next gives us a sense of security and purpose. Yet, the wisdom of Proverbs 27:1 gently reminds us, "Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring." This isn't meant to discourage planning but to shift our perspective on who truly holds the pen. When we write our plans in permanent marker, we set ourselves up for frustration when life doesn't follow our script – but what if we began seeing our plans as drafts that God might lovingly edit?
Jesus told a story about a farmer who had an exceptional harvest and made big plans to build bigger barns, enjoy his wealth, and take it easy – without once considering God's timeline. "You fool!" God said to him. "This very night your life will be demanded from you." How often do we make detailed plans while forgetting to include God in the conversation? The rich fool wrote his future in permanent ink, but God had the final edit. What would change if we started holding our plans loosely? As we learn this practice of writing in pencil while surrendering the eraser to God, let's pray for hearts that remain flexible and trusting.

Let's Pray
Father in Heaven,
I come to You today, aware of Your presence all around me. You know the plans I've been making – some with prayer, others completely on my own. Your Word reminds me not to boast about tomorrow because I don't know what even today might bring.
Lord, I confess my struggle with control. I like having everything mapped out, with no surprises or detours. But life doesn't work that way, does it? The plans I make in pencil so often get erased or redrawn by circumstances I never saw coming. Help me to remember that when my plans change, it's not always a mistake or failure – sometimes it's Your loving hand guiding me toward something better.
I think about that rich fool in Jesus' parable, who planned his comfortable future without once considering Your timeline. Father, I don't want to be like him. Give me wisdom to hold my dreams and goals with open hands. When disappointments come and plans fall through, teach me to look for Your fingerprints in the changes.
Thank You for caring enough to edit my story. Thank You for seeing what I cannot see and loving me enough to redirect my steps. When my plans are erased, help me trust that Your edits are always improvements to the story of my life.
Give me courage to write my plans in pencil while trusting You with the eraser. Help me find peace in surrendering control and joy in following Your lead, even when it takes me to places I never planned to go.
In Jesus' name, who surrendered His will to Yours perfectly,
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
When was the last time your carefully made plans were completely changed? Looking back now, can you see any ways God might have been working through those changes?
What area of your life do you find hardest to surrender to God's control? What makes it so difficult to keep those plans written in pencil?
If you knew with certainty that God wanted to change something you're currently planning, what emotions would that bring up for you? What does this reveal about your trust in God?
Think about a time when changed plans led to something unexpectedly good. How might remembering this story help you the next time your plans need divine editing?
May we all grow in the art of holding our plans loosely while holding God's hand tightly. Remember that your worth isn't tied to how well your plans succeed but to who you are. As you practice writing in pencil this week, notice how your trust muscles grow stronger with each surrender. I pray that you enjoy your weekend!
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace
God Bless!
