We all have people we look up to - celebrities, athletes, authors, or even friends on social media. These people catch our attention because we admire something about them. What we might not realize is that the people we follow and admire are quietly teaching us how to live, think, and act. This happens so slowly that we often don’t notice it. Today, we’re going to pray about the powerful influence these role models have on our hearts and ask God to help us choose our influences wisely.
Short Devotional
Think about the last few people you watched on TV, followed online, or talked about with excitement. What values do they represent? What kind of life do they live? Without us realizing it, these people become our teachers. They show us what success looks like, how to handle problems, and what really matters in life. We start to copy their words, their attitudes, and even their beliefs about right and wrong.
Paul understood this truth when he warned the church in Corinth about the power of influence. He knew that hanging around people who didn’t share their faith would slowly change how they thought about God. The same thing happens to us today. When we spend lots of time admiring people who don’t love God, we can start to think like them. That’s why it’s so important to be careful about who we let influence us and to ask God to help us choose heroes who will point us toward Him.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come to You knowing that You see everything about my life, including the people I admire and look up to.
I thank You for being present with me right now as I bring this important matter to You in prayer.
Lord, I confess that I haven’t always been careful about who influences me. Sometimes I find myself admiring people who don’t love You or live according to Your ways.
Your Word says that bad company corrupts good character, and I realize that the people I follow are quietly shaping my heart and mind. Help me to see clearly how these influences are affecting me.
I struggle with being drawn to people who seem successful or popular, even when their values don’t match Yours. I find myself copying their attitudes, their language, and their priorities without even thinking about it.
Please forgive me for allowing these influences to pull me away from You.
Thank You for loving me enough to warn me about this. Thank You for caring about every part of my life, including who I admire and follow. I’m grateful that You want to protect my heart and help me grow in the right direction.
Please give me wisdom to choose my influences carefully. Help me to admire and follow people who love You and live according to Your truth.
When I’m tempted to be impressed by worldly success, remind me of what really matters. Fill my heart with desire for You above all else.
I trust You to guide me and change my heart.
In Jesus’ powerful name,
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
What would change in your life if you started following people who put God first in everything they do?
If Jesus were choosing your role models for you, who do you think He would want you to admire and why?
What kind of influence are you having on others who might be looking up to you?
God cares deeply about every influence in our lives because He knows how powerfully they shape us. He wants to protect our hearts and help us become more like Jesus. As we become more aware of who we’re following, we can make better choices about who gets to speak into our lives. May God give us wisdom to choose influences that draw us closer to Him.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace
God Bless!
