There are moments when we find ourselves standing next to someone who is hurting, and we have absolutely no idea what to say. Maybe the pain has gone on for so long that we've run out of encouraging words, and we quietly wonder if anything we say even makes a difference anymore. This devotional and prayer are here to help us discover that the right words — spoken from a genuine heart — can reach places inside a person that nothing else can touch, and that God wants to use our voices as instruments of real, lasting comfort.

Short Devotional

There is something Jesus did consistently throughout His ministry that we often overlook — before He acted, He spoke. Whether He was calling Lazarus out of a tomb, telling a paralyzed man to get up, or simply looking at someone and saying "I see you," His words carried a weight that changed everything they landed on. It makes us stop and ask — if the words of Jesus could bring hope to a broken spirit and strength to a failing body, what might happen if we chose our own words more carefully when we sit beside someone who is not getting better?

Too often, we reach for words that make us feel comfortable in an uncomfortable situation — the quick phrases, the rushed reassurances, the "God has a plan" responses — when what the person in front of us actually needs is someone willing to speak life into their weariness without trying to speed past their pain. Words are not just sounds that fill silence; they carry the power to either nourish a person's soul or leave them more depleted than before we arrived. As we come to God in prayer, let's ask Him to shape not just what we say, but the kind of people we are becoming — so that when we open our mouths to someone who is hurting, grace is genuinely what comes out.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I come to You today knowing You are right here with me. You see every person I love who is hurting — the ones whose bodies are not getting better, the ones who are tired of fighting.

Help me, Lord. Teach me what to say when there are no easy answers.

Your Word says that gracious words are like a honeycomb — sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Let my words carry that sweetness. Let what I say bring life, not empty comfort.

Forgive me for the times I said the wrong thing, or said nothing at all, because I was afraid or didn't know how.

Give me the courage to sit with someone in their pain without trying to fix it with words that sound good but feel hollow.

Fill my mouth with Your truth. Fill my heart with Your love so that what I speak is genuine and kind.

I trust You can use my voice as a tool in Your hands. I believe You are still working, even when healing doesn't come the way we hoped.

Thank You for being a God who never runs out of grace.

In the name of Jesus, amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • Imagine you are the one who is not getting better. What is the one thing you would most need to hear from someone who loves you — not a promise that things will improve, but something that would genuinely reach your soul on a hard day? How does that change how you show up for others?

  • Think about a time someone said something to you during a painful season that actually helped — what was it about those words that made them feel different from everything else people said? What do you think that person understood about you in that moment?

  • Is there someone in your life right now who is suffering, and if so, have you been avoiding them because you don't know what to say? What is the fear underneath that silence, and what do you think it is costing them?

The people around us are carrying more than we can see, and the words we choose have far more power than we typically give them credit for. God does not want us to have all the right answers — He wants us to have hearts that are willing to show up, speak truth gently, and love people through the long and painful in-betweens.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.

God Bless!
