Bible Verse

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations. (NLT)

Something strange happens when we go through life feeling empty on the inside — we start looking for reasons outside of us to explain what is happening on the inside. We label it, name it, and try to manage it, but no matter what we try, the feeling just doesn't go away. This devotional and prayer will help us take an honest look at whether the emptiness we carry might actually be a heart that needs God to do something only He has the power to do — and praying this prayer just might be the turning point that changes everything.

Short Devotional

The Israelites had grown so used to going through the motions that they couldn't even recognize how far they had drifted from God. They still had their habits and routines, but deep down their hearts had slowly become hard — not all at once, but little by little, one small choice at a time. The dangerous thing about a heart that has grown hard is that it doesn't always feel hard from the inside — it just feels quiet, flat, and disconnected, like going through the days without ever really being present.

We live in a world that is very good at giving us words for what we feel — worn out, checked out, done, and over it — and while those feelings are real and worth paying attention to, they can sometimes become the end of the conversation when God wants them to be the beginning of one. What if the emptiness we've been trying to push through, explain away, or survive is actually God's way of saying that something deeper needs His attention? That question alone is worth carrying into prayer today — and it is exactly the question that God is waiting and ready to answer.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being right here with me in this moment.

I come to You honest and tired. There are days when I feel nothing — no joy, no fire, no real desire to connect with You.

For a long time, I thought something was wrong with my mind or my circumstances. But today, I ask You to show me the truth.

Could it be that what I am feeling is not just exhaustion — but a heart that has grown hard toward You? I don't want to keep living behind a wall. I don't want to just go through the motions anymore.

You promised in Your Word that You would take out the heart of stone and give me a heart of flesh — a heart that is alive and open and able to feel You again.

I am asking You to do that surgery in me right now. I cannot fix myself. I have tried and failed. So I surrender this hard, tired, and numb heart to You.

Fill me with Your Spirit. Move me from the inside out. Teach me to want the things You want. I trust You completely with everything.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • If God were to point to one area of your heart that you've been holding back or protecting from Him, what do you think it would be? What makes it hard to let go of that particular area?

  • In your own words, what does it mean for a heart to be truly alive? What would your everyday life look like — your relationships, your choices, your mornings — if your heart were fully open and responsive to God?

  • Write a short, honest letter to God about exactly where you are right now. Not where you think you should be, but where you actually are. Don't edit yourself. Just let it out.

Wherever this finds you today — tired, numb, hopeful, or somewhere in between — know that God is not surprised by any of it, and He has not walked away from you. The fact that you are here, reading this and willing to sit with the hard question, is already a sign that something is beginning to stir. There is still more ahead — keep going, because the next edition will continue to walk with us through what it looks like to live on the other side of a heart that has finally been opened up.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.

God Bless!
