Bible Verse

But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (NIV)

There is a quiet struggle many of us carry that is easy to miss because it hides inside of good things. It hides inside giving, inside serving, and inside telling others about what God has done. This devotional and prayer will take us into an honest conversation about what happens when our good deeds slowly stop being about God and start becoming something we offer to the people around us, and why learning to catch that pattern is one of the most important things we can do for our faith.

Short Devotional

Jesus was never impressed by religious performances. In Matthew 6, He speaks directly to people who were doing all the right things, giving to the poor, praying, and fasting, yet He tells them that doing the right thing for the wrong reason carries a serious cost. He points out that when we perform our good deeds for the approval of people, we may get exactly what we were looking for, but it will be the only reward we receive.

The challenge for us is that this kind of performance rarely looks like showing off. It shows up in a prayer request that subtly mentions what we gave up, or in a conversation where we casually bring up how much we helped someone. The real test of our hearts is not whether we give, but whether we can give, walk away, and be completely at peace with God being the only one who ever knows about it.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I come before You today, knowing You see everything I do.

You see every gift I give and every quiet moment I choose to help someone else. I want to be completely honest with You.

There are times when I give to others and then find a way to make sure someone notices.

I tell myself it is just sharing what You have done, but deep down I know I am looking for people to see me.

Forgive me for turning what was meant to be just between You and me into a performance for others.

Teach me to give the way Your Word calls me to, in secret, trusting that Your eyes are enough.

Help me care more about Your approval than the approval of those around me. When the urge rises up to let others know what I have done, give me strength to let it go.

Make my heart clean, Father. Let everything I do come from a place of real love for You and not a need to be seen.

I trust that You see and reward what is done in secret, and that is enough for me.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • Think about the last time you did something kind or generous for someone. Did you tell anyone about it afterward, and what was going on inside you when you made that choice?

  • How would you honestly feel if you gave something significant to help someone, they never thanked you, and no one else ever found out? What does that feeling tell you about who you were really giving for?

  • In what areas of your life is it hardest for you to do good without someone knowing, and what do you think is driving that need?

The truth your Word offers us is not meant to make us feel guilty. It is meant to set us free from the exhausting work of making sure people always see how good we are. Carry that freedom with you this week, and pay attention to the quiet moments when God alone is watching, because those are the moments He rewards.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.

God Bless!
