Bible Verse

Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins.[a]

Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.” (NLT)

Sometimes the scariest prayers we can pray are the ones where we actually mean what we say. When we tell God we trust Him with our lives, He might just take us up on that offer. Today, we're going to look at what happens when God asks us to give something that makes us completely dependent on Him to come through. This isn't about being reckless with money or making poor choices. It's about those moments when God calls us to step out in faith, even when it feels scary. We'll explore why these uncomfortable moments of trust might be exactly what our hearts need to grow closer to Him.

Short Devotional

There's something powerful about being in a place where we have no choice but to trust God completely. Think about learning to ride a bike as a child - the moment when someone let go of the back and we had to trust our own balance. That split second of panic often turned into the joy of finally riding on our own. God sometimes works the same way in our spiritual lives. He allows us to get into situations where our only option is to lean completely on Him.

The beautiful thing about these moments is that they teach us something we can't learn any other way. When we give from our extra money, we learn about generosity. When we give in a way that requires God to provide our next meal, we learn about His faithfulness in a whole new way. It's not that one is better than the other, but they teach us different lessons. These stretching moments help us understand that God really will take care of us, not just in theory, but in the practical details of our daily lives. When we look back on these times, we often realize they were some of the most meaningful seasons of our faith journey.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I thank You for being present with me right now in this moment. You see everything about my life - my fears about money, my worries about the future, and my desire to trust You more deeply. I'm grateful that You know exactly what I need before I even ask.

Thank You for the example of the widow, who gave her last two coins when she could have kept them for herself. Her story challenges me because I realize how often I hold back when You're asking me to trust You completely.

I confess that I sometimes want to follow You, but only when it feels safe and comfortable. I struggle with giving in ways that would require me to depend on You for my next provision.

Help me understand that You're not trying to harm me when You ask for more than I think I can give. You're actually inviting me into a deeper relationship where I can experience Your faithfulness firsthand.

Show me the areas where I'm holding back because I'm afraid You won't come through for me.

I want to trust You with my whole heart, not just the parts that feel easy. Give me the courage to say yes when You call me to step out in faith, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Help me remember that You have never failed anyone who truly depends on You.

I believe You will provide for me just like You provided for that widow and countless others throughout history.

In Jesus' mighty name, I pray.

Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • What's one area of your life where you feel God might be asking you to depend on Him more completely, and what holds you back from taking that step?

  • Think about a time when you had to trust God with something that felt risky or uncomfortable. How did that experience change your understanding of His character?

  • What fears come up when you imagine depending on God for something you currently handle on your own?

God's invitation to uncomfortable dependence isn't about making our lives harder - it's about making our faith stronger. When we look at the widow's story, we see someone who discovered that God notices and values our trust more than our ability to give impressive amounts. As you go through this week, pay attention to the small ways God might be inviting you to lean on Him a little more. Remember that every step of faith, no matter how small, is precious to Him and helps build the kind of relationship He desires with you.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace

God Bless!
