Generosity is one of those things that sounds easy until it is time to actually do it. Something happens in that moment between seeing a need and deciding whether to respond, and that something reveals a lot about what we truly believe about God. This devotional and prayer is going to walk us through what it really means to trust God with what we have, and why learning to give with an open hand might be one of the most honest acts of faith we ever take.
Short Devotional
There is a quiet connection between how tightly we hold our money and how much we actually trust God. When we see someone in need and feel that pull to hold back, it is rarely just about money. It is about fear. Fear that there will not be enough. Fear that giving means losing. But the truth is, every act of generosity is really a declaration that God is bigger than our fear, and that we believe He will take care of us no matter what. The real question is not how much we have to give. The question is whether we actually believe God when He says He will provide.
Today’s verse makes a bold promise that God personally receives every act of kindness shown to someone in need, and that He will repay it. That means generosity is not just a good habit or a nice thing to do. It is an act of trust, a way of saying out loud, with our actions, that we believe God is faithful. And when we choose not to give, even when we have the ability to, we are quietly saying the opposite. Generosity and faith are not two separate things. They are the same thing, just dressed differently.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
We come to You with open and honest hearts today.
We know You are here with us, and we are grateful that You see everything, including the places inside us where fear lives.
Lord, we confess that there are times when we hold too tightly to what we have.
We see someone in need and we walk past them, not because we do not care, but because we are afraid there will not be enough for us.
Forgive us for the moments when our actions have said we do not trust You.
Your Word tells us that when we are kind to the poor, we are lending to You, and that You will repay us.
Help us to believe that with our whole hearts, not just our minds. Teach us to see every person in need as an opportunity to trust You more.
Stretch our hands open, God, and make us people who give freely and without fear.
We thank You for every time You have provided for us, even when we did not deserve it. We thank You that Your faithfulness is not based on how well we do.
Give us the courage to act on what we believe.
In the name of Jesus, we choose faith over fear today.
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
If you genuinely believed that every act of kindness toward someone in need was being received personally by God, how would that change the way you live this week?
Is there an area of your life where fear of not having enough has kept you from being generous? What would it look like to take one small step of faith in that area?
When you imagine giving something away, whether it is money, time, or resources, what emotion comes up first? Where do you think that feeling comes from?
Giving with an open hand is not something most of us do naturally, and that is okay because this is a journey, not a test we pass or fail in a single moment. What matters is that we keep asking God to grow our trust, loosen our grip, and help us see the people around us the way He does. Keep taking the next small step, because every act of faith, no matter how small, is never wasted in God's hands.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
