Think about the last time a friendship got really hard. Maybe the calls became awkward. Maybe the fun disappeared and all that was left was someone's pain and your exhaustion. Today we're going to explore what it means to stick around when friendship stops feeling good and starts feeling like work. This prayer asks God to help us become the kind of friends who stay, even when everything in us wants to walk away.

Short Devotional

Jesus spent His last night on earth with friends who would soon abandon Him. He knew Peter would deny Him. He knew they would all run when the soldiers came. Yet He washed their feet, shared a meal with them, and called them friends anyway. That's the picture of love that stays even when it knows what's coming.

We live in a world where relationships are easy to quit. If someone becomes too much work, we can just stop responding to their texts. If a friendship isn't fun anymore, we can slowly fade away. But today’s Proverb reminds us that "a friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need." Real friendship isn't measured by the good times we share, but by our willingness to stay during the hard times. Are we ready to ask God for the strength to be that kind of friend?

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I come before You acknowledging You are with me. You see my heart and know how hard it is to stay in friendships when they become heavy and complicated.

Lord, I confess I have walked away from people when their problems became too much. I have let friendships fade because they stopped being fun or easy.

I have chosen my comfort over someone else's need. Forgive me for being a fair-weather friend.

Thank You for being a friend who is always loyal. Thank You for staying with me through my mess, my mistakes, and my darkest moments.

Father, I ask You to change my heart. Give me strength to stay when friendship becomes awkward and uncomfortable. Help me show up even when there is no emotional reward.

Teach me to love like You love—consistently, patiently, and without conditions.

When I want to run from someone's pain, hold me there. When I feel drained and empty, fill me with Your Spirit. When I don't know what to say, give me wisdom to just be present.

Make me the kind of friend who is born to help in times of need. Let my loyalty reflect Your loyalty.

I trust You will give me everything I need to love others well.

In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • How does it feel knowing that Jesus chose to stay with His friends even when He knew they would abandon Him? What does that teach you about God's heart for you?

  • Describe a time when someone stayed with you through something hard. How did their presence change your experience, even if they couldn't fix your problem?

  • If God promised to give you everything you need to love one difficult friend well, who would you choose and what would you ask Him for?

God never asks us to be the kind of friend He won't help us become. When we feel empty, He fills us. When we don't know what to do, He guides us. The friendships that cost us the most are often the ones that shape us into the people He created us to be.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.

God Bless!
