Have you ever noticed how quickly things can disappear? One moment everything feels secure, and the next moment it’s gone—a job ends, a relationship breaks, health changes, or savings vanish. These moments shake us to our core because they expose something we didn’t realize was there: the things we were secretly depending on more than God. When the eagle flies away with what we valued most, we discover what our hearts were really holding onto. This prayer helps us examine where we’ve placed our trust and invites us to build our lives on the only foundation that can never be taken away.
Short Devotional
Jesus told a story about a man who built his house on sand. When the storm came, everything collapsed. He also described a man who built on rock—when the storm hit, his house stood firm. The difference wasn’t the storm. Both men faced the same wind and rain. The difference was the foundation. We often think we’re building on rock when we’re actually building on sand. We tell ourselves we trust God, but then a sudden loss reveals we were trusting our bank account, our reputation, our relationship status, or our health all along. The loss doesn’t create the problem—it just shows us what was already true about where we placed our security.
Solomon understood this when he wrote today’s verse. The imagery is striking—wealth doesn’t slowly fade, it suddenly takes flight. But this truth applies to more than money. Anything we depend on more than God has wings. When it flies away, we’re left standing in the rubble of our false foundations, finally able to see what we were really worshipping. This is actually God’s mercy, giving us the chance to rebuild on something that lasts.
Let's Pray
Heavenly Father,
I come before You today, acknowledging that You are the only foundation that cannot be shaken. I confess that I have built parts of my life on things with wings—things that could fly away at any moment.
I’ve put my trust in my income, my abilities, my relationships, and my plans, believing they would always be there to catch me. When I’ve experienced sudden loss, the pain has been so sharp because it revealed how much I was depending on those things instead of depending on You.
Thank You for being patient with me when I place my security in temporary things. Thank You for loving me enough to allow those things to fly away sometimes, so I can see clearly what I’ve been worshipping.
I’m grateful that even when everything else disappears, You remain. You are the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Help me recognize what I’m clinging to right now that could vanish in the blink of an eye. Give me the courage to loosen my grip on the things I think are keeping me safe.
Teach me to build my identity, my worth, and my security on You alone. When loss comes—and it will come—let me stand firm because my foundation is solid rock, not shifting sand.
I don’t want to wait for the eagle to take everything before I realize where my heart has been. Show me today where I’m trusting in temporary things.
Transform my perspective so I see clearly that You are more valuable than anything I could lose. Help me hold everything with open hands, knowing that what truly matters can never be taken from me.
In the powerful name of Jesus, who conquered death and proved that nothing can separate me from Your love,
Amen.
Journaling Prompts
If you suddenly lost the one thing you worry most about losing (money, relationship, health, status), what would that reveal about where you’ve placed your trust?
Describe a time when something “flew away” from your life unexpectedly. Looking back, can you see any false foundations that loss exposed?
Imagine yourself five years from now, having built your life entirely on trusting God rather than circumstances. What would be different about your peace, your choices, and your responses to change?
Building on the right foundation doesn’t mean bad things won’t happen. Storms come to every life. The question is whether we’ll still be standing when the wind stops blowing. God invites us today to examine our foundations honestly and to place our trust in the only Rock that cannot be moved. As you go through this week, pay attention to what causes you the most anxiety—that’s often pointing you toward what you’re trusting more than God. Next week, we’ll explore another area where God’s word challenges us to live differently and trust more deeply.
Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace.
God Bless!
