When we think about helping others, most of us picture writing a check or dropping coins in a collection jar. But what if God has something much bigger in mind? This devotional and prayer will challenge us to look beyond quick fixes and easy giving. We’ll explore how God calls us to build real relationships with people who need more than our money - they need our hearts. This prayer is important because it helps us see others the way God sees them and opens our hearts to connections that change both lives.

Short Devotional

Jesus spent most of His time with people others avoided. He didn’t just give them things and walk away. He sat with them, ate with them, and listened to their stories. When we only give money but avoid real connection, we miss what God really wants from us. Think about the people in your community who struggle - do you know their names? Have you ever heard their dreams or fears? God designed us for relationship, not just transactions.

Many of us have learned to help from a distance because it feels safer and easier. We can write a check without getting messy or uncomfortable. But when we keep people at arm’s length, we rob ourselves of the joy that comes from real friendship. We also miss the chance to see how God works through ordinary conversations and shared meals. The people we think we’re helping often end up helping us more than we ever helped them.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I come to You knowing that You see every person as valuable and loved. Thank You for being present with me right now as I open my heart to Your truth.

I confess that I often treat helping others like checking a box instead of building real friendship.

When I read in Your Word that those who give to the poor will lack nothing, I realize You’re not just talking about money - You’re talking about genuine care and connection.

Father, I admit that I sometimes close my eyes to poverty because it makes me uncomfortable. I give spare change but avoid real conversation. I donate old clothes, but don’t learn people’s names.

Help me see that the person asking for help has stories, dreams, and wisdom to share. Show me how to move beyond quick fixes to lasting friendship.

Give me the courage to sit with people who are different from me. Help me listen without trying to fix everything right away. Teach me to receive from others instead of always being the one who gives.

I know that You often speak through people I least expect, so open my ears to hear Your voice in new ways.

Thank You for never treating me like a charity case but welcoming me as Your beloved child. Help me extend that same love to others.

In Jesus’ powerful name,

Amen.

Journaling Prompts

  • What fears or assumptions hold you back from developing real friendships with people who are struggling financially?

  • If Jesus were living in your neighborhood today, which people do you think He would spend the most time with and why?

  • What would it look like to treat someone in need as a teacher rather than just someone to help?

God has placed people in your path who need more than your spare change - they need your heart. As you step into deeper relationships with those around you, you’ll find that God blesses both you and them in unexpected ways. Remember that every person carries something beautiful that God wants to show you through them. Trust that He will guide your next steps toward building the kind of connections that last.

Until next time,
May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May He make His face shine upon you;
And be gracious to you and give you peace

God Bless!
